Objectives

The aim of the course is to provide students with the knowledge of the general aspects about biology, genetics, microbiology and general pathology. Thus, the students will be able to explain the general aspects of: -normal cell processes, functions of cell organelles, mechanisms of cell replication; - cell adaptations and pathological cell processes, neoplastic transformation, inflammation and immunity; -the laws of inheritance and transmission of genes, applied to human pathologies; - bacteria and viruses and the main mechanisms involved in their pathogenesis.

Learning outcomes

the student must acquire the basic knowledge of cellular degeneration, oncology and immunology

Prerequisites

the studente must have the bases to learn the lessons

Programme

Module: APPLIED BIOLOGY
- Basic concepts of macromolecules: carbohydrates, lipids, nucleic acids, and proteins.
- Prokaryotic and eukaryotic cells: organelles, characteristics, and functions: nucleus, ribosomes, RER, REL, Golgi apparatus, lysosomes, perixisomes, cytoskeleton; extracellular wall and extracellular matrix, mitochondria, and chloroplasts; cytoskeleton.
- Biological membranes: structure and proposed models; the passage of material across membranes: passive, active, endocytosis, and exocytosis; cell junctions.
- Chromosomes, the cell cycle, and cell division: DNA and proteins, nucleosomes, heterochromatin, eurochromatin, condensed chromosome. Phases of the cell cycle. Mitosis and Meiosis.
- DNA and its role in heredity: characteristics and DNA replication
- Notes on gene expression: transcription, genetic code, and translation
- Effects of rooting on cells

Module: GENETICS

Module: GENERAL PATHOLOGY

Control and alterations of cell proliferation and differentiation; hyperplasia, hypertrophy, metaplasia, anaplasia. Molecular basis of neoplastic transformation: oncogenes and tumor suppressor genes. Morphology of the neoplastic cell. Invasivity and metastasis. Tumor promotion and progression. Apoptosis and angiogenesis in tumors. Chemical, physical and viral carcinogenesis. Tumor antigens and markers. Tumor classification criteria.

Module: MICROBIOLOGY
Etiological agents of infection in humans with particular reference to bacteria, viruses and fungi: notes on structure and classification, etiopathogenesis, epidemiology and diagnosis.
Etiopathogenesis and diagnosis of infections caused by some exemplary pathogens:
Chronic hepatitis virus
HIV
SARS-CoV-2
Tuberculosis mycobacterium
Aspergillosis
