Learning outcomes

The aim of the course is to offer a general introduction to the historical development of medical knowledge and healing practices (knowledge and understanding), so that the students may be able to read and critically evaluate one or more short articles, pertaining to the lessons (applying knowledge and understanding). A global perspective will be adopted in the discussion of ancient medicine (roughly prehistory to the 18th century), while modern medicine will be addressed as a unified endeavour. However, colonial and post-colonial issues will be addressed at the beginning of the course
A number of lessons will be devoted to the history of contagious and infectious diseases, whose role in shaping human history has been underlined by historiography
At the end of the course, the student will be able to:
Understand the nurse’s role, responsibilities, and scope of practice within the healthcare system.
Collaborate effectively with other healthcare professionals in patient care.
Identify vital signs and perform basic procedures for monitoring vital functions.
Describe and recognize the main healthcare devices (venous accesses, drains, ventilation and nutrition systems).
Apply basic safety principles in patient and device management.
Manage, in simulation or controlled settings, basic emergency situations.
The student will be in pèossess of basic psychological notions.

Prerequisites

Students must have basic knowledge of:
- the chronology, in a broad sense, of the development of history and civilisations in different areas of the planet and globall
- geography, necessary for the historical context of phenomena

Students must also be able to read and understand complex texts that are not scientific in nature.

Exam mode

30 quizzes + 1 question with an open answer. To pass the exam, students must obtain a mark of at least 18/30. To obtain a mark of 30/30 with honours, students must demonstrate that they have acquired excellent knowledge of all the topics covered during the course and are able to connect them in a logical and coherent manner with the textbook.
