ORTHOPEDIC TECHNIQUES INTERNSHIP III Single channel
Chair (Coordinator) and Rapporteur: DOMENICO DI FRANCESCO
Lecturers
Learning outcomes
The student will earn internship credits, which will be completed in hospital and outpatient healthcare facilities, in orthopedic laboratories, and in workshops. This includes gaining experience analyzing medical prescriptions, reading and understanding clinical exams, assessing patients, and identifying orthopedic problems. Students will also observe the design of orthopedic devices and observe measurements taken using negative plaster casts. Upon completion of the internship, the student will be able to fully produce custom orthopedic devices. They will possess the basic skills to manage the entire manufacturing and/or assembly process of various devices, following medical prescriptions with partial autonomy.
Prerequisites
Knowledge of human anatomy, human physiology and the main musculoskeletal pathologies.
Programme
Acquisition of the knowledge and skills to manage technical work in the workshop and fitting room. Knowledge of the range of prosthetics and orthoses used in modern orthopedic techniques. Ability to understand physician prescriptions and the ability to select the most appropriate materials for the construction of prosthetics and orthoses.
Study and analysis of the orthopedic devices listed below:
1. Wraparound insoles for flatfoot valgus.
2. Third metatarsal relief insoles for diabetic foot.
3. Thigh-leg support for flexed knee with knee straightener.
4. Thigh-leg support for valgus or varus deformity.
5. Thigh-leg support for congenital clubfoot.
6. Thomas stapes for lower limb relief.
7. Transfemoral prosthesis.
8. Transtibial prosthesis.
9. Fabric brace and splints for spondylolysis.
10. Cheneau-type brace for right dorsal (d8/12) and left lumbar (l2/4) scoliosis.
11. AFO brace for equinus foot.
12. MZ-type brace.
13. Quarter-sphere insoles for flatfoot.
14. Milwaukee scoliosis brace.
15. Multifunctional chair for a geriatric patient with hemiplegia
16. Lightweight wheelchair for a patient with hemiplegia
17. Custom-made shoe and insole
18. Nancy Hilton brace
19. Neuroswing brace
20. Cervical spine orthosis
21. Brace for vertebral collapse
22. Univalve (Cheneau-type) anti-kyphosis brace with acromial thrusts.
23. Lightweight/superlight wheelchair with trunk-pelvis postural unit for a tetraplegic patient
24. Superlight wheelchair for a paraplegic sports patient.

Tutori, ortesi, protesi, ausili di Giuseppe Cannata, Calogero Foti.
Frequency
Mandatory for 100% of the hours
Exam mode
oral exam. Case simulation. Practical test in the laboratory.
Example exam questions
A lower limb amputee requires a custom-made prosthesis.
Clinical case analysis: Describe what information from the patient's medical history, examinations, and assessments is needed to design the prosthesis.
Prosthesis design: Indicate the main functional and anatomical characteristics the prosthesis must have and how these influence the choice of materials.
Production phases: Explain the main steps, from measuring the residual limb using a negative cast to manufacturing and assembling the prosthesis in the workshop.
Quality control and fit: What checks and adjustments will you perform to ensure the comfort, functionality, and safety of the device?
Integration with the medical prescription: How will you ensure that the final device fully complies with the doctor's instructions?
