Learning outcomes
Explore biomedical sciences to acquire advanced care, education, and prevention skills to address the primary health issues of pediatric, adult, and geriatric populations. Understand normal biological processes and the mechanisms responsible for pathologies, and critically evaluate the related diagnostic methods. Understand the main mechanisms of drug action. Understand the transmission mechanisms of the most common microorganisms and control strategies.
Prerequisites
A basic knowledge of biology, biochemistry, physiology, and human anatomy is required.
Programme
Module: GENERAL PATHOLOGY
As part of the module students will be provided with the tools for an adequate and critical knowledge:
- of the aetiological factors responsible for the alterations of cell function, and of the cellular and molecular pathogenic mechanisms;
- of cell proliferation and apoptosis control;
- of the mechanisms of neoplastic cell transformation, and the new approaches of the personalized medicine;
- Of inflammation processes and fever
- of the Etiology and pathogenesis of immune disorders / autoimmunity,
- of the role of transplant immunology, immune deficiencies and hospital infections.
Module: PHARMACOLOGY
The course includes an introductory section on the fundamental principles of pharmacokinetics and pharmacodynamics, followed by an in-depth study of the main drug classes of specific interest. Particular attention will be given to mechanisms of action, dosage, adverse effects, and drug interactions.
Module: MICROBIOLOGY AND CLINICAL MICROBIOLOGY
Bacteriology. Microorganism–host interaction: resident bacterial flora and exogenous pathogenic bacteria. Mechanisms of bacterial pathogenesis. Bacterial toxins and related diseases. Bacterial spores. Biofilm formation. Antibiotics, chemotherapeutic agents, and mechanisms of resistance to antibacterial agents. Common and emerging nosocomial (hospital-acquired) infections. Overview of the principal medically relevant bacteria.
Virology. General characteristics of viruses: composition, morphology, and structure. Viral replication cycle. Pathogenesis of viral infections. Antiviral drugs. Overview of the principal medically relevant viruses.
Mycology. General characteristics of fungi. Mechanisms of fungal pathogenicity. Superficial and systemic mycoses. Antifungal drugs. Overview of the principal medically relevant fungi.
Basics of Immunology: innate and adaptive defenses against microbial invasion; overview of vaccines and vaccination strategies.

Lessons mode
The lessons will be held in a face-to-face teaching mode, with the support of teaching materials that will be projected in the classroom and subsequently made available to students in digital format.
Frequency
Class attendance is mandatory.
Exam mode
Knowledge will be assessed through an oral exam that will cover the topics of the various modules in an integrated manner. The assessment will therefore be an overall evaluation of the entire course.

2. What is the first-pass effect and why is it important? To which pharmacokinetic parameter is it linked?
3. What are the drug targets? List and briefly describe them, and provide an example for each from subsequent special pharmacology lessons.
