Learning outcomes

Pharmacology
Upon completion of the course, students should be able to:
- Define the main pharmacokinetic parameters, explain their practical use, and define steady state and how it is achieved.
- Understand the principles of drug response variability and the principles of pharmacogenetics to identify potential applications in the clinical practice of pharmacotherapy.
- Understand the types of Adverse Drug Reactions to distinguish them and assess their severity.
- Understand the methodology of pharmacovigilance and its practical application.
- Understand how drug-drug and drug-food interactions occur, describe their possible pharmacokinetic mechanisms, and list some examples.
- Understand the principles governing drug development in the various phases of preclinical and clinical trials and understand the underlying methodology.
- Understand the basic methodology for the Evaluation Analysis of pharmacological interventions.
- Understand the basic tools for assessing health-related quality of life and the principles of their use. Use in Pharmacoeconomic Analysis
- Understand opioid drugs and their advanced use in pain management.

Prerequisites

Students must have basic knowledge of chemistry, biochemistry, anatomy, molecular and cellular biology.
For Pharmacology, no specific knowledge is required other than the general pharmacology topics covered during the three-year Nursing program.

General properties of the immune system. Cellular and molecular mechanisms of the immune response and their role in defense against bacterial, viral, and parasitic infections and in immunopathogenic reactions. Vaccines. Advanced vaccine preparation methods. Antibiotic resistance. Characteristics and evolution of antibiotic resistance in major bacterial pathogens through analysis of its origin and spread. Analysis of the molecular techniques used to identify resistance determinants and mechanisms of transfer.

Module: MICROBIOLOGY AND CLINICAL MICROBIOLOGY
Bacteriology. Microorganism–host interaction: resident bacterial flora and exogenous pathogenic bacteria. Mechanisms of bacterial pathogenesis. Bacterial toxins and related diseases. Bacterial spores. Biofilm formation. Antibiotics, chemotherapeutic agents, and mechanisms of resistance to antibacterial agents. Common and emerging nosocomial (hospital-acquired) infections. Overview of the principal medically relevant bacteria.
Virology. General characteristics of viruses: composition, morphology, and structure. Viral replication cycle. Pathogenesis of viral infections. Antiviral drugs. Overview of the principal medically relevant viruses.
Mycology. General characteristics of fungi. Mechanisms of fungal pathogenicity. Superficial and systemic mycoses. Antifungal drugs. Overview of the principal medically relevant fungi.
Basics of Immunology: innate and adaptive defenses against microbial invasion; overview of vaccines and vaccination strategies.

Lessons mode

The course is based on traditional lectures lasting four hours each.
For Pharmacology, lessons will conclude with tests to assess understanding of the topic covered or activities to put the topics covered in class into practice.

Frequency

Pursuant to the Degree Programme Regulations, students are required to attend the academic and professional development activities of the Course. Attendance is verified by instructors through signature/roll-call sheets, based on updated lists provided by the Academic Secretariat as established by the CCL. A certificate of attendance for the mandatory educational activities of a course is required for students to take the relevant exam.

Exam mode

The exam consists of a written test with multiple-choice questions (8 questions per subject), which must be passed before the oral exam.
To be eligible for the oral exam, at least half of the answers in each subject must be correct.
To pass the exam, students must achieve a grade of at least 18/30 in each module. Students must demonstrate sufficient knowledge of the topics covered during the course. To achieve a grade of 30/30 with honors, students must demonstrate excellent knowledge of all the topics covered during the course, demonstrating a linear argument using technical terms and correct linguistic expressions.
