At the end of the course, the student must demonstrate knowledge of the fundamentals of critical care assistance. The student must possess the skills to identify patients in critical conditions, the abilities for the support of vital functions, and elements of knowledge and competence in the use of complex monitoring and treatment tools for critical conditions. The student must demonstrate that they have acquired knowledge and understanding of the main patterns of instability and the related nursing activities and responsibilities, showing that they have understood and know how to manage traumatic and/or bereavement events affecting patients and their families.

- Concept of critical care area and critically ill patient;
- Concepts of Emergency, Urgency, and critically ill patient;
- The emergency system network: the nurse's role;
- Triage in the in-hospital and out-of-hospital setting;
- Characteristics of the intensive care unit;
- Nursing care of patients in cardiac arrest, acute heart failure, acute respiratory failure, DIC, multiple organ failure, shock;
- Acid-base balance disorders (acidosis, alkalosis), sepsis, acute poisoning, comatose states; BLS-D;
- Support of vital functions in the case of a beating-heart deceased organ donor;
- Techniques and tools for airway management and ventilatory support (intubation, tracheostomy, tracheal suctioning);
- Techniques and tools for hemodynamic support (defibrillation, intra-aortic balloon pump, CVVH, ECMO);
- The emergency department and nursing triage;
- Instrumental monitoring of vital signs: temperature, ECG, BP, CVP, ICP, ABG, SpO2, EtCO2, fluid and electrolyte balance;
- Reading the electrocardiographic tracing from the monitor;
- Nursing management of emergency medications.
