Learning outcomes
At the end of the course, students will be able to identify and manage the main clinical conditions associated with chronic diseases and disabilities, understanding their pathophysiological, diagnostic, therapeutic, and nursing aspects.
Specifically, students will be able to:
-understand the pathophysiological and clinical mechanisms of the main chronic cardiovascular, respiratory, metabolic, renal, gastrointestinal, and bone–metabolic diseases;
-recognize chronic conditions in the elderly, with particular focus on neurodegenerative diseases and the management of pain, malnutrition, and motor agitation;
-apply nursing principles to patients with disabilities of orthopedic, neurological, or metabolic origin, adopting a bio-psycho-social approach;
-use multidimensional assessment tools and scales for the integrated management of chronic and disabled patients;
-work within a multidisciplinary team to plan nursing care and prevent complications related to reduced mobility and disability.
Prerequisites
Basic knowledge of anatomy, physiology, general pathology, and clinical nursing is required. Familiarity with vital signs, their monitoring, and basic principles of acute patient care is recommended.
Programme
Clinical Nursing
-Holistic and person-centered approach to chronic illness and disability.
-Planning, implementation, and evaluation of nursing care using the nursing process.
-Clinical monitoring and prevention of complications in chronic conditions.
-Therapeutic education and promotion of patient self-management and autonomy.
-Nursing management of care continuity across hospital and community settings.
-Effective communication and collaboration within the multidisciplinary healthcare team.

Lessons mode
The course includes lectures integrated with case discussions aimed at applying theoretical knowledge to nursing practice.
Special attention is given to the multidisciplinary approach, multidimensional assessment, and nursing management of major chronic diseases and disabilities.
Frequency
Attendance is mandatory. Active participation in lectures and practical activities is essential to acquire the theoretical and practical skills required for nursing management of chronic conditions and disabilities.
Exam mode
Learning is assessed through a written multiple-choice test, aimed at evaluating theoretical understanding and practical application of knowledge in the field of chronic diseases and disabilities.
The test may be supplemented by an oral discussion or by practical exercises assessing nursing competencies.
Example exam questions
Which of the following factors is most frequently associated with the development of atherosclerosis?
What is the first-line treatment for acute pulmonary edema?
Which blood pressure value defines arterial hypertension?
In which condition is long-term oxygen therapy indicated in COPD?
Which assessment scale is used to evaluate fall risk in elderly patients?
Which of the following is an early clinical sign of immobilization syndrome?
