Objectives
Knowledge of the main causes of disease and related etiopathogenetic mechanisms. Fundamental pathophysiological mechanisms of the main devices and systems. Main organisms pathogenic to humans and the biological fundamental mechanisms of defense of the organism. The inflammatory process, the neoplastic transformation. Elements of techniques in pathological anatomy: samples, fixation, preparation of histological preparations and reporting Istologi and cytological examinations. Grading and staging of neoplasms.
Learning outcomes
1. Knowledge and understanding. By the end of the course, students will have understood basic biomedical sciences, enabling them to recognize the physiological and pathological processes associated with health and disease.
2. Ability to apply knowledge and understanding. Students will acquire the ability to utilize a set of theoretical skills derived from nursing, biological, behavioral, and social sciences to recognize the needs of their patients.
3. Independent judgment. Students will be able to make decisions through a scientific approach to solving patient problems.
4. Communication skills. Students will be able to apply the lessons learned, evaluating the most appropriate language to express their knowledge.
5. Learning skills. Students will develop independent study skills; they will acquire the methodological tools to continue their studies.
Prerequisites
To Have basic knowledge of biology, biochemistry, anatomy, and physiology, as well as knowledge of the fundamentals of clinical nursing, as per the first semester program.
Programme
Module: Technical sciences of laboratory medicine
1. Antimicrobial stewardship from theory to diagnostic practice: effective management of bloodstream infections, new molecular biology techniques, best practices for performing blood cultures.
2. Quality Control: what it is, why it is performed, and its significance in diagnostics. Detailed information: statistics, mean, SD, ET, Levey-Jennings charts, Westgard rules, Sigma metrics, EQA, expanded quality control, and corrective actions.
3. Sociology of work: Perceptual Positions model, empathy, metaphor of the social body and the human body: theory and practice.
4. Biomarkers of cellular damage: highly sensitive troponin.
5. Toxicology concepts: toxicology and drugs of abuse; screening technology; cutoffs and cross-reactivity; drugs of abuse; biological matrices: urine, blood, hair
Module: Pathology and pathophysiology
1. Concepts of aetiology and pathogenesis. Environmental pathology from physical agents (transfer of mechanical energy, thermal energy, radiant energy, atmospheric pressure, from electric currents and from gravitational accelerations), from chemical agents (poisons, lead), from malnutrition and microorganisms.
2. Innate immunity; cells and mechanisms of action.
3. Induced immunity; cells and mechanisms of action.
4. Type I, II, III and IV hypersensitivity.
5. Inflammation. Acute inflammation. Vascular phase. Cellular phase. Chronic inflammation. Reparative processes. Granulation tissue. Wound healing.
6. Oncology. Cancer concept. Criteria of benignity and malignancy. Principles of classification and staging of tumors. Epidemiology of tumors. Oncogenes and tumor suppressors.
7. Endocrine pathophysiology: hormones and neurormones, hormonal receptors, signal transduction and cellular response.
8. Pathophysiology of the hypothalamic-pituitary system: hypothalamic hormones, adenohypophyseal and neurohypophyseal hormones. Insipid diabetes and pituitary neoplasms.
9. Pathophysiology of the thyroid and parathyroid glands: Formation and function of thyroid hormones. Hashimoto's thyroiditis and Graves' disease.
10. Pathophysiology of renal function: renal function and structure in all its components. Glomerular and tubular diseases. Adrenal pathophysiology: Synthesis and action of cortical and medullary hormones. Cushing's syndrome and Addison's disease.

Lessons mode
Classes are in-person, in Italian, and are taught face-to-face in the classroom, supported by slides and/or video clips. Interaction with students is planned during the lessons for clarification.
Frequency
Attendance is mandatory and is recorded by signing a register.
Exam mode
The overall structure of the exam is specified in detail during the first lesson by the course coordinator, and each teacher will provide an adequate description of the exam for their module. The exam for each module is a written test. Depending on the module, the exam consists of both closed and open-ended questions covering topics covered in class. Closed-ended answers will be given a score at the discretion of each instructor; for open-ended questions, the instructor will assign a score based on knowledge of the subject matter, clarity of presentation, and the accuracy and appropriateness of the terminology used. A score of 18/30 or higher is considered a pass.
Example exam questions
Acute inflammation, cells of the natural and acquired immune system
