Learning outcomes

At the end of the course, students will have acquired basic knowledge of the principles of evidence-based nursing and the fundamental concepts of descriptive and inferential statistics. They will be able to recognize the main types of scientific studies, understand the structure of randomized controlled trials and systematic reviews with meta-analysis, interpret basic tables, graphs, and measures of effect, and understand the hierarchy of scientific evidence. Students will also be able to perform a basic critical appraisal of scientific literature and assess its applicability.

Prerequisites

Basic knowledge of mathematics, research methodology, and the use of common digital tools for accessing scientific literature.

Programme

Principles of evidence-based nursing. Introduction to research methodology and the hierarchy of scientific evidence. Basic concepts of descriptive and inferential statistics: types of variables, frequency measures, mean, median, measures of dispersion, confidence intervals, and statistical significance. Main observational and experimental study designs. Structure, aims, and interpretation of randomized controlled trials. Systematic reviews and meta-analyses. Reading and interpretation of tables, graphs, and the main measures of association and effect. Basic critical appraisal of scientific literature and application of evidence to nursing practice.

Books

No mandatory textbooks are required. Study should be based on the topics covered during the lectures and on any teaching materials provided by the lecturer.
