A LOOK AT LIFE: The major themes of biology. The characteristics of life. THE levels of biological organization. ORGANIZATION OF THE CELL: The cell as the basic unit of life. The theory mobile phone. Methods for the study of cells: the optical microscope and the electron microscope. Difference between prokaryotic and eukaryotic cell. The cell nucleus. The cytoplasmic organelles and the their functions: the smooth and wrinkled ER, the Golgi complex, the lysosomes, the peroxisomes, the mitochondria, the cytoskeleton.
