Objectives

At the end of the course of SCIENZE DELL'IGIENE DENTALE I students must have the theoretical knowledge to develop a preventive plan focused on knowledge of the dento-periodontal health characteristics related to a proper home and professional oral hygiene maintenance and prevention, with particular attention to materials and techniques.

The student will be able to distinguish the characteristics of health and disease conditions and risk of adult and pediatric patients. In addition, at the end of the course students must have the practical skills of correctly communicate with the patient aimed at dento-periodontal health motivation, health Promotion in the field of Nutrition, oral hygiene, regular checkups, fluoride.

Learning outcomes

1. Knowledge and Understanding
The student must know and understand:

- Periodontal anatomy and histology.
- The etiopathogenesis and diagnosis of gingival and periodontal diseases.
- The classification of implant and peri-implant diseases.
- Home oral hygiene products (toothbrushes, toothpastes, mouthwashes, dental floss, interdental brushes) and their techniques.
- Dental chair ergonomics and chairside positions.
- The composition of bacterial biofilm and plaque-revealing substances.
- The classification and characteristics of non-surgical periodontal instruments (manual and mechanical).
- The principles of oral and dental prevention.

2. Applied Knowledge and Understanding
The student must be able to apply their knowledge and solve problems:

- Use instruments for dental and periodontal examinations.
- Perform probing techniques and record/record dental and periodontal parameters.
- Apply surgical techniques for scaling with manual and mechanical instruments.
- Perform polishing and air-polishing techniques.
- Implement basic principles of non-surgical treatment for gingivitis and periodontitis.

3. Making independent judgments. The student must be able to collect and interpret data to make judgments:

- Evaluate collected data (e.g., periodontal indices, periodontal chart) for a correct diagnosis of periodontal disease.
- Select the most appropriate home hygiene products and related techniques for each patient.
- Assess the appropriateness of periodontal instruments (manual vs. mechanical) and the effectiveness of polishing.

4. Communication Skills: The student must be able to communicate information, ideas, and solutions:

- Motivate and communicate effectively with the patient regarding home hygiene.
- Explain home oral hygiene techniques to ensure patient cooperation.

5. Learning Ability: The student must have developed the skills necessary to undertake further studies independently:

- Maintain a current knowledge of the various tooth numbering systems.
- Independently learn about professional hygiene instruments and techniques.

Prerequisites

To understand the content of the course and achieve the learning objectives, students must possess basic theoretical knowledge and develop preparatory practical skills by the beginning of the course activities.

These prerequisites can be divided by thematic area:
1. Anatomical-Physiological Area
Anatomy and Physiology: Basic knowledge of the anatomy of the head, neck, and, in particular, the oral cavity. Understanding the normal structure and function of teeth and the surrounding soft tissues.
Dental Terminology: Familiarity with specific terminology and dental numbering systems, essential for recording parameters.
2. Microbiological and Pathological Area
Oral Microbiology: Knowledge of the composition and formation of bacterial biofilm in the oral cavity.
General Pathology (Overview): Understanding the basic etiopathogenetic mechanisms (e.g., inflammation) that lead to the development of gingival and periodontal diseases.
Specific Pathology (Overview): Knowledge of the fundamental concepts of gingivitis and periodontitis to enable diagnosis and basic non-surgical treatment.
3. Instrumental and Clinical Area
Basic Ergonomics: Basic principles of dental chair ergonomics and chairside positioning for proper operation and prevention of postural problems.
Instrumental Semiotics (Basic): Skill in the use of instruments for dental and periodontal examinations.
Hygiene Principles: Knowledge of the principles of oral and dental prevention.
In summary, the student must possess a solid theoretical foundation on the healthy and diseased oral environment and on the first practical notions of approaching the patient and the instruments, in order to then be able to apply the principles of home hygiene and professional hygiene techniques I (probing, scaling, polishing).

Lessons mode

The teacher provides lectures with traditional methods with audiovisual aids and scheduling of lessons as published on the website of the Dental Hygiene School.

Methods of teaching (or a combination of several types chosen by the teacher):
1) Lectures
2) flipped classroom teaching.

Frequency

Following paragraph 5 of the Regulations of the Dental Hygiene School, the student is required to attend educational activities. The frequency is checked by the teachers through signature / updated lists provided by the Academic Office, as established by Council of Course. The certificate of mandatory attendance to the teaching course is required to the student to be admitted at the final test.

Exam mode

To pass the exam the student must obtain a grade of not less than 18/30 in each module. The student must demonstrate the acquisition of sufficient knowledge of the topics of Preventive and Community Dentistry, Dental Hygiene and Introductory Clinic, be familiar with the topics of Statistical and Epidemiological Methodology and being able to support an anamnestic interview and perform a basic oral health examination. To achieve a score of 30/30 cum laude, the student must demonstrate the acquisition of excellent knowledge of all the topics exposed during the course, being able to link them in a logical and consistent way.

Learning assessment methods:
a) Ongoing evaluation during courses with documentation of at least one supervised experience
b) Final evaluation of the course based on procedures and criteria chosen by the teacher
(one or a combination of several types of assessment tests, including: oral presentation on a pre-selected topic, presentation and discussion of the internship experience, practical test, oral assessment on the program, etc.).
