At the end of the course the student must know the basic elements of connection between medicine and law and acquire knowledge about different risk factors and occupational diseases in the health professions also in relation to the regulations in force.
Upon completion of the course the student must know how to carry out the professional activity in compliance with the legal rules and be aware of the main ones deontological obligations in force in the profession.

Students that attend and pass the tests of the Courses of Legal Medicine, Radiation Protection, Hygiene, and Occupational Safety are totally autonomous and able to build ideal environment and working capacity, where their personal legal and medical problems due to practice, and the problems of their staff, patients and patients’ tutors are adequately contained.

These students will be able to produce a virtuous circle that will minimize the stress due to these problems.

Legal Medicine (Dr. Davide Abbate)

Definition and partition of Forensic medicine; crimes against life and individual safety; obligation of information to the Judicial Authority. Obligations of reporting infective and diffusive diseases; outlines on social insurances; civil law forensic medicine (juridical faculty and power of action, interdiction, disqualification). Professional ethics. Consent of the assignee; professional secret; failure to assist; patient’s medical chart; obligations resulting from the law on drugs; professional responsibility of the professional.



Radiation Protection (Prof. Romina Scarsellone)

Radiation in medicine. Structure of the atom and nucleus. Unstable isotopes and alpha, beta, gamma radiation Law of radioactive decay. Radiation detection.
General principles for the protection of operators and patients from ionizing radiation
The use of radionuclides in healthcare and related protection measures
The requirements to be implemented on medical-radiological equipment
The safety of medical and radiological equipment
The radiation protection system provided for in Legislative Decree 101/2020


Hygiene (Prof. Stefano Petti)

Introduction. Definitions. History of hygiene and of hygiene in dentistry;
General characteristics of infectious diseases. Epidemiology and prevention of infectious diseases;
Epidemiological chain of infectious diseases;
Foodborne and waterborne infections;
Airborne infections;
Bloodborne infections;
Infectious diseases at high risk of transmission in the dental health care setting: Hepatitis B, Hepatitis C, Hepatitis delta, AIDS, Covid-19, Tuberculosis, Influenza, Meningitis, Varicella, Measles, Mumps, Rubella, infection from methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA). Emergent infectious diseases could be also discussed in the event that the risk for their transmission in the dental health care setting is high or that they are pandemic.



Occupational Safety (Prof. Stefano Petti)

Epidemiology and Prevention of the most important occupational diseases to the dental staff in general and the dental hygienist in particular. More specifically, infectious diseases that are the main occupational risk to the dental hygienists.

Legal Medicine (Dr. Davide Abbate)
To pass the exam, we suggest a theoretical deepening already from the beginning of the course attendance.

In-presence lectures are usually given by all the Professors. Online lectures also are considered, that are often requested by students through the anonymous OPIS questionnaire. More specifically, online lectures for all the attending students are necessary in peculiar situations like, for example, lockdown, general and transportation strikes, protests with protesters who do not allow the access to the lecture hall, frankly adverse climatic conditions, transfer impairments, such as railway closures due to works, etc.

ALL THE LECTURES ARE GIVEN BY THE REFERENCE PROFESSORS. This is an essential that warrants the building of a virtuous student-professor relationship.

Attending the lessons of the taught Courses is the basis of Article 34 of the Constitution of the Italian Republic that warrants the access to learning for all. Attending the lessons is not, therefore, an obligation, but a right and an opportunity to interact with professors and colleagues regarding the taught subjects.

The tests regarding Hygiene, and Occupational Safety are in written form. The tests regarding Legal Medicine and Radiation Protection are verbal. The final score of the Integrated Course “Health Promotion and Safety” will be the mean of the scores of the four tests.

The Course of Health Promotion and Safety seeks to train and educate the attending students, trying to limit any kind of sciolism, that has a detrimental effect on the memory of the taught disciplines. For every Course, therefore, the items of the tests (either written or verbal) reflect the taught topics or topics specifically indicated by the professors in the material provided to the students.

• In order to facilitate the understanding of the various issues in
  the field of “Health Promotion and Safety”, the lectures will be given during
  the first semester of the second year of the Dental Hygiene Course, and will be
  given in blocks.
  
   
  
  The goal is to complete the explanation and the discussion of each
  issue within one lecture, thus removing the detrimental problem of dividing
  explanation and discussion of one topic in several parts at weeks of distance
  from each other.
  
   
  
  The comprehensive understanding and learning of “Health Promotion
  and Safety” passes through the four disciplines of Legal Medicine,
  Radiation Protection, Hygiene, Occupational Safety. The lectures of these discipline
  will be given in parallel to give the students the opportunity to learn
  different aspects of the same issue, object of the program of two or more
  disciplines, from the different standpoints of the involved disciplines.
  • Books: The notes taken by the students listening and actively
    
    intervening during the lessons asking questions and participating to the
    
    debates are the highest and most important existing type of text, that only
    
    synchronous Courses taught at the University can offer.
    
    
    
     
    
    
    
    Individually taken notes are tailored on each individual
    
    student and are essential to efficiently practice the Dental Hygienist
    
    profession.
