Learning outcomes
The course takes place in the second semester of the first year.
The aim is to provide students with a thorough understanding of the mechanisms of response to injury, with particular attention to the role of the main components of the immune system in both the physiological response and immunopathogenic mechanisms.
Prerequisites
To successfully follow the module, students should possess basic knowledge of:
Cell and molecular biology, with particular reference to cell structure and function, the cell cycle, and the main organelles.
Biochemistry, especially concerning enzymatic mechanisms, energy metabolism, and the main intracellular signaling pathways.
Human anatomy and physiology, to understand the organization and function of the main organs and systems.
Basic microbiology and immunology, useful for understanding inflammatory and immune responses.
Programme
The module includes learning the basic mechanisms of pathophysiology, with
particular attention to the mechanisms of inflammation, coagulation, and
neoplasms. The foundations will be provided for understanding the inflammatory process and
fever, the hemostatic process, and the processes underlying the cellular
transformation that gives rise to oncological diseases.
The basics of the cellular and molecular mechanisms of the immune
response, both innate and acquired, humoral and cell-mediated, will also be provided.
The main immunopathogenic reactions and their classification will be described, with
particular reference to the autoimmune response:
-Pathogenetic mechanisms of autoimmunity: Genetic factors
-Clinical signs in autoimmune diseases
-Diagnostic approach for confirming suspected systemic autoimmune diseases
-Diagnostic approach for confirming suspected organ-specific autoimmune diseases
-Rheumatoid arthritis and thyroiditis
-Celiac disease
-Immunofluorescence and ELISA for the diagnosis of autoimmune diseases
