Learning outcomes
Knowledge and understanding
Upon completion of the module, students will be able to:
Describe the cellular and molecular mechanisms underlying inflammation, coagulation, and neoplastic transformation.
Explain the pathophysiological mechanisms that regulate innate and adaptive immune responses, both humoral and cell-mediated.
Understand the classification of immunopathogenic reactions and the principles underlying their development.
Identify the main pathogenic mechanisms of autoimmunity, with special attention to genetic and environmental factors.
Recognize the principal clinical features of autoimmune diseases, both systemic and organ-specific.
Applying knowledge and understanding
Students will be able to:
Interpret the pathophysiological mechanisms underlying inflammatory diseases, coagulation disorders, and neoplastic processes.
Select and understand the appropriate diagnostic pathways for confirming the suspected presence of systemic and organ-specific autoimmune diseases.
Comprehend and critically evaluate the main laboratory diagnostic tests used in immunology, such as immunofluorescence and ELISA.
Making judgements
Critically analyze the relationship between molecular and cellular alterations and the clinical manifestations of immune-mediated diseases.
Assess the consistency between laboratory findings and the patient’s clinical presentation.
Communication skills
Use appropriate scientific and medical terminology when describing pathophysiological and immunopathological processes.
Communicate clearly and concisely the mechanisms underlying autoimmune diseases and their diagnostic approaches.
Learning skills
Develop autonomy in studying complex pathophysiological mechanisms through consultation of scientific texts and updated literature.
Integrate basic and advanced knowledge for the interpretation of experimental and clinical data.
Prerequisites
Knowledge on biology, genetics, microbiology, anatomy, chemistry and biochemistry.
