Learning outcomes

Upon completion of the course, the student will have demonstrated an advanced and systematic understanding of the pathophysiological mechanisms of major internal medicine pathologies, with particular emphasis on those related to cardiovascular risk. This understanding is achieved through the integration of different perspectives:

Microbiology: Acquisition of knowledge on etiology, pathogenesis mechanisms, and host response.

Pharmacology: Acquisition of the basic concepts regarding drug study and its therapeutic effects, with adequate knowledge of pharmacokinetic and pharmacodynamic principles, mechanisms of action of specific drugs, associated adverse effects, and possible drug-to-drug interactions.

Diagnostic Imaging: Understanding the scientific rationale that links clinical presentations and findings from diagnostic imaging (radiology, ultrasound, CT, MRI) to the respective pathologies.

Prerequisites

To successfully complete this integrated course, a solid foundation in human biology, biochemistry, physiology, and anatomy is essential. These fundamental concepts are considered the necessary prerequisite for effectively addressing and understanding the major internal medicine diseases, the principles of microbiology, pharmacology, and diagnostic imaging technique

Programme

Module: IMAGING DIAGNOSTICS
 Elements of Radiation Protection and Radiobiology.
• Risk factors of radiation exposure and radiation protection measures.
• Conventional radiology of the musculoskeletal system and chest:
Principles of operation, indications.
• Principles of operation and indications of CT,
Multiplanar reconstructions and special CT techniques used in diagnostics, use of contrast media.
• Physical principles of operation and indications of MRI,
Relative and absolute contraindications.
• Physical principles of the use of ultrasound in medicine:
Indications of the method and its limitations.




Module: PHARMACOLOGY
The course includes an introductory section dedicated to the fundamental principles of pharmacokinetics and pharmacodynamics, followed by an in-depth study of the main drug classes of specific interest. Particular attention will be given to mechanisms of action, dosage, adverse effects, and drug interactions.


Module: MICROBIOLOGY AND CLINICAL MICROBIOLOGY
Program: Elements of Microbiology and Clinical Microbiology and organizational concepts and the application of the diagnostic implications of the main infectious agents.


Module: INTERNAL MEDICINE
The program aims to outline a comprehensive path focusing on cardiovascular health, starting from primary prevention up to the analysis of the main diseases that compromise the heart and blood vessels. The program should outline the phenotype of the patient with cardiovascular disease, including the metabolic and nutritional aspect.

The program includes:
Cardiovascular Risk and Primary Prevention
Arterial Hypertension
Ischemic Heart Disease
Diabetes Mellitus
Cardiorenal Metabolic Syndrome
