Learning outcomes

Knowledge and ability to understand the cellular and molecular mechanisms underlying the development of diseases; knowledge of the main genetic, cytogenetic and molecular techniques for the diagnosis of diseases.

Prerequisites

Knowledge of the basic fundamentals of preparatory subjects in the health area, such as biology, chemistry, physics, mathematics, in particular, knowledges of basic cellular and molecular biology

Programme

Module: PATHOLOGICAL ANATOMY
N/D
Module: APPLIED MEDICAL TECHNICAL SCIENCES
- General pathology: etiology and pathogenesis; aspects of morbid phenomena; cell damage (regressive – expansive; reversible – irreversible); carcinogenesis.
- Genetic pathology: karyotype; molecular cytogenetic techniques (banding techniques of chromosome, FISH, SKY); DNA alterations: genomic, chromosomal and gene mutations; examples of diseases with genetic transmission: Fragile X syndrome, Duchenne dystrophy, Cystic fibrosis, Sickle cell anemia
- Molecular pathology: diagnostic molecular biology techniques (restriction enzymes, Southern blot, PCR, direct DNA sequencing, deep sequencing).

Module: MICROBIOLOGY AND CLINICAL MICROBIOLOGY
Hints on bacterial cell, pathogens and saprophites, virulence factors, biofilm; viruses (structure and replication), fungi.
Bacterial identification.
Protection of the personnel and good laboratory practice: classification of microrganisms according to the personnel risk (levels 1 -> 4)
General safety practices in the microbiology lab
Management of the biological samples in microbiology
Disinfection and sterilization
Antibiotics and disinfectants, antibioticresistance and antibiogram
Materials and techniques in microbiology
Workflow and equipments

Module: GENERAL PATHOLOGY
Monoclonal antibodies and their applications in laboratory medicine, imaging, and therapy. Autoimmune diseases, allergic diseases: pathogenic and diagnostic aspects.
