Learning outcomes

Understanding the basic mechanisms of cellular biological phenomena in their physiopathological dimensions, resulting from interaction with the external environment and with the most common infectious pathogens.
Fundamental knowledge of pharmacology necessary to understand the principles of drug action, pharmacokinetics, pharmacodynamics, and drug safety, with particular reference to pregnancy, breastfeeding, and maternal and child health. Expertise in bibliographic research and critical reading of international scientific literature.
Understanding of the basic mechanisms of infection by pathogens and the basic principles of clinical microbiology, with particular reference to infections during pregnancy.
Acquisition of basic knowledge of research methodology, with particular reference to applications in obstetrics.
Understanding of effective communication methods, acquisition of the skills necessary for physical examinations, and the use of basic diagnostic tools.
Learning of the basic notions of the history of medicine and obstetric science

Prerequisites

Basic knowledge of chemistry, molecular and cellular biology

Programme

Module: CLINICAL PATHOLOGY
Concept of health and disease. Concept of etiology and pathogenesis. Environmental pathology: chemical and physical causes; thermal, electrical and radiation-induced pathology.
Generality of genetic and molecular disorder. Inflammation: acute and chronic inflammation. Fever. Alterations of proliferation and cell differentiation. Key features of the tumor cell. Carcinogenesis. Invasiveness and metastasis. Criteria for the classification of the tumors and tumor markers

Module: MICROBIOLOGY AND CLINICAL MICROBIOLOGY
Characteristics and organization of bacterial cells.
• Mechanisms of bacterial pathogenesis.
• Structure and classification of viruses. Mechanisms of viral pathogenesis.
• Morphological and structural characteristics of fungal cells.
Clinical Microbiology.

• Main etiological agents of urogenital tract infections: Chlamydia trachomatis, Neisseria gonorrhoeae, Streptococcus pyogenes, E. coli and other enterobacteria, Mycoplasmas.
• Agents responsible for infections contracted during pregnancy, transplacentally transmitted, perinatal and postnatal: Treponema pallidum, Listeria monocytogenes, Toxoplasma gondii, rubella virus, cytomegalovirus, Streptococcus agalactiae, HSV, HIV, hepatitis B, C, and Delta viruses.

Module: GENERAL PHARMACOLOGY
The obstetric art in Greece; the theory of generation for Hippocrates; the midwives in Rome; developments in obstetric science in Middle Ages and between Humanism and the Renaissance; childbirth techniques and tools; regulations for the discipline of the art of obstetrics; embryology between the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries; the cesarean section; the conquests of the twentieth century; new childbirth techniques; sterility treatment and medically assisted procreation.

Module: CLINICAL METHODOLOGY
Program
1. The Clinical Relationship and Communication
• The clinician–patient relationship
• Conducting the clinical interview
• Communicating diagnoses and therapeutic decisions
2. The Phases of the Clinical Process
• Data collection: observation and medical history taking
• Formulation of diagnostic hypotheses
• Verification of hypotheses: interpretation of signs and symptoms, use of
laboratory and instrumental tests
• Clinical decision-making: defining the diagnosis and planning therapeutic
Strategies
3. Medical History Taking
• Structure of the medical history: personal data, past and current medical history,
family, physiological, and social history
• Identification of risk factors: cardiovascular, metabolic, environmental, and
behavioral
• Family history: hereditary patterns of major diseases
• Pain assessment: location, quality, intensity, radiation, triggering and relieving
factors
o Focus on chest pain: differential diagnosis among cardiac, pleuropulmonary, gastroesophageal, and musculoskeletal causes
• Loss of consciousness
• Dyspnea: clinical interpretation and correlations with major cardiac and respiratory
conditions
• Exercise tolerance
• Palpitations
4. Physical Examination and Clinical Signs
• General principles: inspection, palpation, percussion, and auscultation
• Chest examination:
o Inspection of the chest and breathing pattern (asymmetries, accessory
muscle use, deformities)
o Palpation (tactile vocal fremitus, chest expansion)
o Percussion (resonant, dull, or tympanic sounds)
o Auscultation of lung and heart sounds (breath sounds, murmurs, heart tones,
and rhythms)
• Abdomen: inspection, superficial and deep palpation, percussion, and auscultation
• Cardiovascular system and limbs: peripheral pulses, edema, and capillary refill
5. Principles of Instrumental Semiology
• Blood pressure measurement: techniques and interpretation of results
• Electrocardiogram (ECG): basic principles, recognition of sinus rhythm, and main
abnormalities (arrhythmias, ischemia, bundle branch blocks)
• Clinical ultrasound: physical principles, indications, and limitations of thoracic and
cardiac ultrasound
• Laboratory tests: interpretation of key findings relevant to internal medicine and
Cardiology

Module: METHODOLOGY OF OBSTETRIC RESEARCH
The course addresses the main aspects of fundamental human sciences applied to midwifery practice, with particular focus on the therapeutic relationship, healthcare communication, and the psychological, social, cultural, ethical, and professional aspects of care for women, couples, and families throughout the childbirth pathway. The principles of clinical methodology in midwifery will be explored, including clinical reasoning, history taking, assessment of care needs, planning and management of midwifery care according to the care process, clinical documentation, patient safety, and the application of Evidence-Based Practice. The course also covers the fundamental principles of general and obstetric-gynecological pharmacology, with particular emphasis on the safe use of medications during pregnancy, labor, delivery, postpartum, and breastfeeding, as well as the pharmacological management of common obstetric conditions. Furthermore, the course introduces midwifery research methodology, including the scientific method, formulation of clinical questions, literature search strategies, critical appraisal of scientific evidence, interpretation of basic statistical indicators, and the integration of research findings into evidence-based midwifery practice.

Module: HISTORY OF MEDICINE AND MIDWIFERY
• Introduction to pharmacology.
• Pharmaceutical dosage forms and routes of administration.
• Pharmacokinetics: absorption, distribution, metabolism, and elimination.
• Pharmacodynamics: receptors, agonists, antagonists, and dose-response relationships.
• Adverse drug reactions and drug safety.
• Drugs during pregnancy and breastfeeding: general principles.
• Teratogenicity and risk-benefit assessment.
• Pharmacovigilance.
• Literature search using PubMed and critical reading of international scientific literature.
• Preparation of an individual paper based on scientific articles in English.
