Learning outcomes
At the end of the course, students will have acquired basic knowledge of the anatomical structure and main physiological functions of the human body, with particular attention to the nervous system and neurophysiological processes, which are fundamental for understanding the mechanisms underlying the cognitive, behavioral, and emotional functions relevant to psychiatry.
• Knowledge and understanding: describe the macroscopic and microscopic organization of the main organs and systems, with a focus on the central and peripheral nervous systems; explain the basic physiological processes related to the regulation of mental and behavioral activity.
• Ability to apply knowledge and understanding: link structure and function in relation to neurobiological processes and the main pathophysiological conditions of psychiatric interest.
• Independent judgment: critically evaluate the anatomical and physiological correlations useful for interpreting the functional alterations underlying psychiatric disorders and guiding rehabilitation interventions.
• Communication skills: correctly use anatomical-physiological and neurophysiological terminology to describe structures and processes, interacting effectively with the multidisciplinary team.
• Learning skills: develop the methodological foundations for addressing the clinical and professional disciplines specific to psychiatric rehabilitation.

Epithelia.: classification (simple and stratified epithelia), structure, localization, function. Special cytological features of epithelia.
Glandular epithelia: exocrine and endocrine glands.
Connective Tissue. Structure (extracellular matrix, connective tissue cells), localization, function. The cells of connective tissues. Collagen fibres. Elastic fibres. Reticular fibres. Loose and dense connective tissues. Skeletal tissues:
Cartilage (chondrocytes and extracellular matrix),
Bone. Compact and spongy bone. The main events of ossification.
Blood: plasma, the number and the main functions of the formed elements of the blood (erythrocytes, white cells).
Nervous tissue: the structure of the neurone: cell body and axon.The myelin sheath. Histological organization of the nerve. Synapses and neuromuscular junctions. Glia.
Muscle tissue. Structure, ultrastructure and functions: skeletal muscle, cardiac muscle, smooth muscle. The contractile apparatus of striated muscle. The neuromuscolar junction.


Module: HUMAN PHYSIOLOGY
• Introduction to Physiology: Homeostasis. The cell. Properties and functions of cell membranes: transport and electric potential.
• Blood: constituents: plasma, erythrocytes, leucocytes, platelets, and general functions.
• Endocrinology: hormone structure and action. Pituitary hormones and hypothalamic control mechanisms. Thyroid hormones. Adrenocortical steroid hormones. Endocrin pancreas: insulin and diabetes. Parathyroid hormone and calcitonin: calcium and phosphate metabolism. Male and female sex steroid hormones.
• Cardiovascular: The circulation and the physical laws of hemodynamics. The functions of the arterial and venous systems. Cardiac output and venous return.
• Microcirculation and lymphatic system: blood-tissue exchanges. Control of blood flow and arterial pressure. Cardiovascular diseases.
• Respiration: structure of the lungs. Pulmonary pressure and ventilation; Pulmonary volumes. Mechanical properties of the lungs. Pulmonary circulation. Gas exchange. Respiratory gas transport. Control of breathing.
• Gastrointestinal physiology: motility, nervous control and blood circulation in the gastrointestinal tract. Food progression and mixing in the digestive tract. Gastrointestinal secretion: salivary, gastric, pancreatic, biliary, intestinal secretions. Food digestion. Absorption of water, nutrients and electrolytes in the small intestine. Absorption in the large intestine.
• Energy metabolism: basal metabolic rate. Use of lipids and carbohydrates for ATP production
• Thermoregulation: body temperature; mechanisms for generating and dissipating heat. Hypotalamic temperature-regulating centre. Fever. Disturbances of temperature regulation.
• The kidney and the body fluids: Body fluid compartments; water and salt equilibrium. Urine formation: glomerular filtration, tubular transport of the electrolytes, tubular water reabsorption and the regulation of fluid osmolarity. Regulation of the concentration of the principal electrolytes (sodium, potassium, calcoium, magnesium, phosphate).
• Reproduction physiology: notes on spermatogenesis and folliculogenesis.
