Objectives
Physics Applied to Medicine (2 ECTS): Understanding the physical principles (fluid mechanics, thermodynamics, optics, and electromagnetism) governing the operation of analytical equipment and laboratory measurement systems. Prevention and Biosafety (Hygiene and Occupational Medicine – 2 ECTS total): Mastering the regulatory framework for workplace safety (Legislative Decree 81/08). Identifying risk factors in healthcare settings and learning best practices to prevent cross-contamination or occupational accidents (needlestick injuries, cuts, exposure to xenobiotics). Quality Control and Laboratory Practice (2 ECTS): Introducing the fundamentals of Good Laboratory Practice (GLP) and the workflows for archiving, labeling, and initially processing biological samples. Computer Literacy (2 ECTS): Gaining proficiency in spreadsheets, database management, and information processing systems to effectively interact with Laboratory Information Systems (LIS) software. Radiation Protection and Imaging (Diagnostic Imaging – 1 ECTS): Understanding the physical principles and biosafety protocols associated with the use of ionizing and non-ionizing radiation, radioactive tracers, and diagnostic imaging techniques.
Learning outcomes
Understand the basic principles of laboratory medicine and quality control methods.
Understand the conceptual foundations of hygiene and public health.
Basic notions of occupational medicine and knowledge of current regulations.
Acquire basic knowledge of classical and modern physics necessary to understand natural phenomena and the principles underlying major biomedical equipment, with a focus on experimental aspects and safety.
Provide essential skills in health informatics, laboratory systems, and artificial intelligence for health, preparing technicians capable of operating in modern digital healthcare environments.
Provide basic knowledge of the use of radiopharmaceuticals and nuclear medicine procedures, magnetic resonance imaging, and computed tomography.
Prerequisites
basic notions of physics, computer science and biochemistry

Exam mode
The assessment of acquired skills is based on an oral and written exam covering topics covered in the individual modules. The exam will assess: 1) the level of specific knowledge acquired; 2) communication skills; 3) proficiency in technical/scientific language; 4) the ability to process and critically analyze the information acquired.
Example exam questions
Current regulations on quality control,
clinical laboratory models,
concept of error in biomedical laboratories, •
principles of RIA and IRMA assays,
definition of health and disease status,
types of health information systems
