Programme

Module: APPLIED PHYSICS
The fundamental and derived physical quantities. The International Measurement System. The atomic structure of matter. Radioactive decay. Electricity and Magnetism. X-Ray. X-ray interactions with matter. Photoelectric effect. Compton effect. Mechanism of radiological image formation.
Equipment for the production and control of X-rays
Elements of radiation protection. Concept of risk deriving from exposure to ionizing radiation. Possible damage. Prevention and protection procedures. Organization of company radiation protection.

• Structure of matter: atom, bonds, and periodic table
• Water: structure and properties
• Solutions: reactions, equilibrium, acids, bases, and pH
• Organic chemistry: carbon and functional groups
• Carbohydrates: types and functions
• Lipids: types and role in membranes
• Proteins: structure and function
• Enzymes: function and regulation
• Metabolism: principles of metabolic biochemistry and main metabolic pathways

• Metrology and Measurement (2 hours)
• Electrical signals and measurement systems (2 hours)
• Electromagnetism and principles of circuit theory (2 hours)

Module: MEDICAL STATISTICS
Types of data and their intrinsic characteristics. Concepts and nomenclature in statistics.
Descriptive statistics: grouping of data, sampling, frequency distribution, measures of central tendency, measures of dispersion.
Inferential statistics: estimation of parameters, tests of hypothesis
Epidemiological studies: cohort studies, case control studies, cross-sectional studies.
Indicators in epidemiology: estimate of prevalence and incidence, relative risk, odds ratio
