Learning outcomes
• Knowledge and understanding: Knowledge or understanding of the principles of general and applied hygiene, occupational medicine, and forensic medicine as relevant for students in medical radiology techniques.
• Ability to apply knowledge and understanding: Ability to assess hygiene, health, and safety conditions in both living and working environments.
• Independent judgment: Ability to argue on topics related to general hygiene, environmental and occupational hygiene, and forensic medicine.
• Communication skills: Ability to illustrate concisely and analytically, highlight key points, provide examples, and use scientifically correct language.
• Learning skills: Ability to read and understand publications and prevention protocols, and ability to ask questions.
Ability to research the necessary literature to acquire new knowledge. Ability to self-learn.
Prerequisites

Programme
General and Applied Hygiene
1) Elements of General and Applied Hygiene: concepts of Health and Disease, prevention, infectious, chronic, and degenerative diseases, and preventive measures.
2) Hygiene and health requirements for work environments.
3) Outdoor Air Pollution
4) Microclimate and Indoor Air Quality in Healthcare Environments.
5) Hygiene of Water Intended for Human Consumption
6) Food Hygiene
7) Municipal Solid Waste Management
8) Management of Healthcare Waste
LEGISLATIVE SYSTEM ON WORKER SAFETY
MODULE 1: General Safety and Risk Management in the Workplace
• Regulatoryframework and safetyorganization: Legislative Decree 81/08 and subsequentamendments. Safetyroles in healthcare: Employer, OccupationalPhysician, Safety Manager (RSPP), Workers' SafetyRepresentative (RLS), and the specificrole and responsibilities of the TSRM (RadiologicalTechnologist).
• Riskassessment in radiological and hospital settings: Definition of hazard, risk, and harm. The RiskAssessmentDocument (DVR).
• Specificriskfactors for the TSRM:
o Biologicalrisk:Exposure to bloodbornepathogens, needlestick/sharpsinjuries, biological PPE, and sanitizationprotocols for radiologicalequipment.
o Physicalrisk and manualhandling:Ergonomics and patienthandling (non-self-sufficientpatients) on radiologicaltables.
o Chemical and medical gas risk: Use of contrast media, high-leveldisinfectants, and liquidhelium management in MagneticResonanceImaging (MRI).
o Work-related stress and shift work: Impact of night shifts and on-call duties in emergencyradiology.
• Emergency management:Firesafety, evacuationplans, and first aid in healthcarefacilities.
MODULE 2: RadiationProtection and RadiationRisk Management
• Physical and biologicalbases:Interaction of ionizingradiation with matter. Biologicaleffects of radiation: somatic and geneticeffects, deterministic (threshold) and stochastic (probabilistic) effects.
• RadiationProtectionRegulations:Introduction to relevantEuropeandirectives and nationallegislation. The threefundamentalprinciples: Justification, Optimization (ALARA principle), and Dose Limitation.
• Physical and MedicalSurveillance:
o The role of the RadiationProtection Expert and the Authorized/OccupationalPhysician.
o Classification of workplaces (Controlled and SupervisedZones) and exposedworkers (Category A and B).
o Personal and environmentaldosimetry: types of dosimeters (thermoluminescent TLD, electronic) and correctplacementduringinterventional or diagnosticprocedures.
• Protectionmeasures in differentdiagnosticareas:
o ConventionalRadiology and CT:Fixed and mobile shielding, use of leadaprons, thyroidcollars, and leadglasses.
o InterventionalRadiology and Angiography:Managing high dose loads for the operator
operator, correct use of footpedals, and suspendedleadshields.
o Nuclear Medicine:Rules of conduct in radiopharmaceuticalmanipulationlaboratories (hot lab), radioactivewaste management, and surface/internalcontaminationrisks.
o Radiotherapy: Bunker safetysystems (interlocks) and emergencyprocedures for stucksources or Linacfaults.
MODULE 3: Safety with Non-IonizingRadiation and ElectromagneticFields
• MagneticResonanceImaging (MRI):
o Risksrelated to the staticmagneticfield): projectileeffect of ferromagneticobjects, and classification of medicaldevices (MRI Safe, Conditional, Unsafe).
o Risks from radiofrequency (RF) fields and gradients: tissueheating (SpecificAbsorption Rate - SAR) and peripheralnervestimulation.
o Emergency procedures in MRI: the "Quench" button (loss of cryogen) and managingasphyxiation/anoxiarisks.
• Ultrasound and Lasers: Thermal and mechanicalrisks of ultrasound; classification and safetycompliance of medicallasers
