Objectives

Knowledge and ability to understand
The course does not aim to provide the bases to teach Chemistry in its conceptual structure to future teachers, but, after revising some basic concepts, to experiment a viable way to contribute, together with other disciplinary areas, to the achievement of objectives proposed by the 2012 National Guidelines for primary school and childhood.
Applying knowledge and understanding
The student must be able to autonomously choose practical and training programs and experiences useful for the transmission of the scientific method applied to the observation of phenomena related to the structure of matter. He will be able to self-assess his teaching and educational skills in the field of chemistry in full autonomy.
Making judgements
The student must be able to clearly and adequately illustrate information related to educational and teaching situations related to the field of chemistry and easily observable in everyday life using "classic" and multimedia means of communication.
Lifelong learning skills
The student must have as its objective the autonomous understanding of the scientific method that passes through the phenomenological observation of situations that involve chemistry. Furthermore, the student is expected to acquire team learning skills for the realization of collective projects.

Learning outcomes

Knowledge and understanding
The course does not aim to provide future teachers with the foundations for teaching chemistry in its conceptual structure, but rather, after reviewing some fundamental concepts, to experiment with a viable way to contribute, together with other subject areas, to the achievement of the objectives proposed by the 2012 National Guidelines for primary and nursery schools.
Applying knowledge and understanding
Students must be able to independently choose programmes and practical and educational experiences useful for transmitting the scientific method applied to the observation of phenomena related to the structure of matter. They will be able to self-assess their teaching and educational skills in the field of chemistry in complete autonomy.
Formulating judgements
Students must be able to clearly and adequately illustrate information relating to educational and teaching situations linked to the field of chemistry and easily observable in everyday life, using “traditional” and multimedia means of communication.

Prerequisites

Basic arithmetic knowledge.
Ability to read and understand a text.

Programme

Modulo "Storie di Atomi"
States of matter. Definitions and units of measurement of mass, volume, density. Properties of matter at the macroscopic and nanoscopic levels. The birth of Dalton's atomic theory: Lavoisier and the law of conservation of mass; Proust and the law of definite and constant composition; Dalton and the law of multiple proportions. Bequerel and the discovery of radioactivity. Simplified structure of the atom: protons, neutrons, electrons. Atomic number and mass number. The periodic table. Elements of the s block and p block. Periodic properties: atomic radius; first ionisation energy; electron affinity. Chemical properties of elements: metals and non-metals. Atoms and ions. Metallic properties of elements. Noble gases and Lewis's octet rule. Lewis notation for elements in the s block and p block. Chemical bonding: ionic, metallic, covalent (homopolar and heteropolar). Electronegativity (fourth periodic property). Lewis formulas of some inorganic compounds.
Chemical bonding and properties of matter: the phenomenon of electrical conduction in solids and solutions (with practical examples). Molecular geometry: linear, planar triangular, tetrahedral, trigonal bipyramidal, octahedral. Molecular polarity. Interactions between molecules (intermolecular forces).
Acid-base reactions. pH and pH indicators (with practical examples).
Modulo "Storie di molecole"
Chemistry and alchemy.
The toolbox: measurement and physical quantities. Educational experiences related to the construction of
measuring instruments and their use.
The physical states of matter, heating curves and phase diagrams of pure substances. Educational
experiences on the physical states of matter and the characterization of pure substances.
Separation of mixtures and related educational experiences.
Interpretation of phenomena through the particle model of matter.
The fundamental laws of chemistry.
Pedagogical arguments in favor of an early initiation to chemistry.
Considerations on the nature of chemical language and on the links between chemistry and literature and
the figurative arts.

Books

Per il Modulo "Storie di Atomi":
Any chemistry textbook at secondary school level is useful for obtaining information on the topics covered in the course. If you need to purchase one, it is recommended that you buy:

Lessons mode

The course topics will be covered in class with the aid of PowerPoint presentations, which will also provide the stimulus for discussions involving the whole class.
Examples of small and harmless practical experiments will be proposed to demonstrate some of the concepts presented in theoretical form.
A visit to the "Primo Levi" Chemistry Museum will also be arranged to give students the opportunity to see the equipment used in the past to lay the foundations of the discipline being taught.

Frequency

Attending classes is really encouraged.
