Learning outcomes

The course aims to provide students with an integrated understanding of biology and psychology.
By the end of the course, students should be able to understand:
- the composition, organization, and integration of cells,
- biological macromolecules and cellular metabolism,
- the organization, expression, and transmission of genetic information and genetic mutations,
- the basic processes and psychological determinants of helping behavior.
This will enable them to understand physiological processes and pathologies, as well as integrate biomedical knowledge with practical rehabilitation skills for patient care.

Prerequisites

In order to understand the content of the course and achieve the learning objectives, at the beginning of the educational activities, students must possess basic knowledge of mathematics, chemistry, and biology, developed during secondary school courses.

Programme

Module: MEDICAL GENETICS
Aims of the Course:

Medical Genetics aims to provide the basic general concepts necessary to understand the mode of transmission of hereditary characteristics normal and pathological. At the end of the course the student will learn about the inheritance of some genetic disorders.

Program of Medical Genetics

The structure and function of DNA
From DNA to protein: transcription, RNA splicing the genetic code, translation.
Human genome organization
Genes and mutations.
Origin of mutations. Point mutations, deletions, insertions, splicing mutations, dynamic mutations.
Structure and function of chromosomes.
Human chromosomes: the number, structure and function.
Chromosomal aberrations.
The normal and pathological human karyotype
Correlations between gametogenesis, meiosis, and segregation.
Family pedigrees: symbols
Concepts of inherited traits, gene, allele, locus
Mendel's laws and allelic interactions: dominance and recessive, phenotype and genotype
Family pedigrees: symbols
Classification of genetic disorders
Examples of hereditary monogenic Mendelian transmission:
autosomal dominant, autosomal recessive, X-linked recessive, X-linked dominant.
Non Mendelian inheritance

Module: BIOCHEMISTRY
Biochemistry program (1CFU)

Composition, properties, and states of matter (Structure of the atom and nature of chemical bond)
Solutions.
Electrolytes and Oxidation-Reduction Reactions.
Acids and bases, pH, mention of Biological buffer systems.
Structure and function of biological molecules: carbohydrates, lipids and aminoacids and proteins.
biological reactions and enzymes.
Metabolism: General principles. Mention of energetic metabolism and ATP role.
Mention of main metabolic pathways: glycolysis, Krebs cycle, oxidative phosphorylation, lactic acid fermentation, alcoholic fermentation.

Module: APPLIED BIOLOGY

The prokaryotic cell. The eukaryotic cell. Cellular organelles.
Cytoskeleton. Membranes. Cell-cell interaction. Cell signaling. Transport. Endocytosis. Exocytosis.
DNA structure. Replication, transcription, translation. RNA functions.
Mitosis. Meiosis. Cell cycle.
Mutations.

Module: GENERAL PSYCHOLOGY
The course aims to introduce the beginning and development of scientific psychology, to deepen the basic processes and psychological determinants of helping behavior.
The main topics will be related to: Perception, Attention, Memory, Emotions, Executive functions, Reasoning and Decision-making.
Obiettivi formativi in inglese
RISULTATI DI APPRENDIMENTO IN INGLESE
At the end of the course the student will master the knowledge about the basic processes of general psychology, personality and cognitive and motivational determinants of helping behavior
Competenze da acquisire in Inglese
Students should be able to: identify the mental processes that determine the behavior of the helping behavior; critically examine the theories, to relate the processes investigated, the appropriate use of psychological terminology

Lessons mode

Frontal lessons

Frequency

Attendance is mandatory.
To be admitted to the exam, students must have at least 67% attendance.

Exam mode

The exam grade will be the mathematical average of the grades obtained in the individual subjects of the course (Biology, Biochemistry, Genetics, Psychology).
For each subject, students will take a written exam with multiple-choice and/or open-ended questions. Students will pass the exam with a grade equal to or higher than 18/30.
