Module: GENERAL SURGERY
The course aims to provide students with the fundamental knowledge of general surgery relevant to dietetic practice. At the end of the course, students will be able to:
Understand the pathophysiological basis and surgical management of major diseases of the gastrointestinal tract, hepatopancreatobiliary system, endocrine organs, and abdominal wall.
Recognize the role of nutrition in the perioperative management of surgical patients.
Correlate surgical pathology with dietetic assessment and dietary interventions before and after surgery.
Communicate effectively with the surgical team, demonstrating interdisciplinary awareness.
Prerequisites
The course requires prior knowledge of human anatomy, physiology, and general pathology, which are considered essential for the effective study and understanding of surgical diseases. Recommended background includes basic biochemistry and nutrition.

- For the first 5 hours block:- multidisciplinary treatment of malnutrition due to excess (obesity) and deficiency (anorexia) and related conditions; - surgical treatment of malnutrition due to excess. Bariatric surgery: malabsorption, hypovitaminosis, diabetes remission... dietary management of the post-bariatric patient; - pathophysiology of major endocrine diseases; endocrine-metabolic diseases requiring dietary treatment: foundations for developing dietary therapy.
- For the second 5-hour block:- Ketogenic diet for obesity. Management of patients with dyslipidemia, diabetes, osteoporosis, hepatic steatosis, hypogonadism (abnormal adipose tissue distribution, e.g., gynoid pattern in males), PCOS, and thyroid disorders (hyperthyroidism, hypothyroidism).- Assessment of dietary and nutritional risk and protective factors related to primary, secondary, and tertiary prevention in the field of endocrinology.
