Objectives

REPRESENTATION SCIENCE I
In order to supply a solid basic preparation of the principal elements of representation, the three courses of the sector are carried out in the first three years integrating theoretical and practical aspects. The first year provides the methods and the means to understand traditional drawing techniques integrating them with I.T. instruments. To provide the fundamentals of descriptive geometry in order to understand the laws and the methods for the representation and the conception of space and architectural forms. With this knowledge the student can face the first experiences of design.

Learning outcomes

The correct management of the tools specific to both two-dimensional and three-dimensional form and the techniques of computer-based drawing for the correct training of the designer

Prerequisites

No prerequisites

Programme

Essential points of the teaching will be:
a) To provide students with the theoretical and practical principles for the solution of problems that belong to the geometry of the plane.
b) Analysis of the dynamic tensions inherent in the circumscribed space of the two-dimensional compositional field: investigation and analysis of the tensions determined by the graphic action
c) Investigation of the design meanings of balance, symmetry, rhythm and proportion.
In particular, the teaching focuses on the correct training of the designer capable of managing the tools of the two-dimensional form with rigor and creativity to achieve the realization of the conscious form in the compositional space on the plan.

Second part - Descriptive Geometry
The aim is to provide the theoretical principles and operational tools to design and communicate the three-dimensional form with the techniques of traditional and computer design:
Essential points of the teaching are:
a) Appropriation of the intuitive method of representing space. Investigation of the reciprocal relationships that exist between geometric entities. Intersection problems, construction of solids and their intersections. Shadows as a result of a projection from a proper or improper center.
b) Appropriation of the method of oblique and orthogonal axonometries.
c) Appropriation of the method of double orthogonal projections.
d) Appropriation of the perspective method.

Lessons mode

The theoretical lessons are followed by exercises carried out partly in the classroom and partly at home. At the end of the course the student must produce two projects (one individual and one group) adequately described through digital model tables and physical models.

Frequency

attendance is not mandatory but strongly recommended

Exam mode

The student will have to demonstrate the knowledge and mastery of the theoretical processes of the subject through oral and graphic answers demonstrated directly during the exam in addition to the individual notebook on the theoretical principles of the subject and the collection of exercises proposed during the course

Example exam questions

Find the intersection of a line and a plane
Find the intersection of two general planes
Find the intersection of two simple solids
Find the intersection of complex solids
