Objectives
(English)ENERGY AND ENVIRONMENTAL MANAGEMENT – INTEGRATED COURSEModule: Energy management of buildingsThe aim of this Course is toprovide students with the foundations for understanding the physical laws and phenomena that govern the behaviour of a building, with a special focus onthe transmission of heat and on the properties and transformation of air-steam mixtures. At the end of the Course, the student will have acquired the keytools for tackling the study of the relevant application issues and the necessary physical and technical knowledge enabling him/her to suitably interact withthe trade operatives in this sector, with regard to the problems related to the architectural project. The Course features 4 parts: energy and environmentalsustainability, heat transmission, psychrometry and basic elements of acoustics and light engineering, with a special focus on the following: well-being andenergy saving in the design of buildings; energy saving regulations in the building sector; the behaviour of the building shell; climate and environmentalwell-being; the energy requirement of a building; the use of renewable energy sources; energy saving measures.Module: Environmental certificationThiscourse deals with the issues of energy and environmental certification of buildings, from a purely technical and practical perspective, by examining theregulatory and application aspects, with a view to providing effective building design guidelines for the current regulatory framework. In particular, the aim ofthe course is to provide a basic knowledge with respect to the following key topics: pollution and environmental quality control (air, water, soil); theenvironmental quality requirements of buildings; design and plant solutions for improving the energy and environmental quality of buildings; systems for theenvironmental certification of buildings (Leed, ITACA Protocol); the environmental certification of building products (lifecycle design, product lifecycle analysis(LCA), ecological quality marks: Ecolabel, EPD); environmental quality in the building process (ISO 14001 and EMAS certification for building companies)
Learning outcomes
Knowledge and Understanding
The module on Energy and Environmental Management of Buildings aims to provide students with fundamental knowledge of Environmental Technical Physics, with particular reference to the principles of energy engineering and thermodynamics applied to the building–plant system. Topics related to renewable energy sources, the properties and transformations of moist air, and heat transfer mechanisms (conduction, convection, and radiation) will be thoroughly addressed. The course also introduces the fundamentals of lighting design and economic analysis to support design decisions. In the environmental field, students will acquire knowledge of the principles of energy and environmental certification, criteria of bioclimatic architecture, the current regulatory framework (including DNSH and CAM), the main building certification protocols (LEED, ITACA, WELL, ARCA), life cycle assessment (LCA) methods, and environmental quality labels.
Applying Knowledge and Understanding
Students will be able to apply the principles of environmental technical physics to solve problems related to building energy management, as well as to use tools and methods for evaluating thermo-hygrometric and lighting performance. They will also be able to apply sustainability criteria in building design, interpret and use the main environmental certification protocols, and employ modelling tools for the analysis of urban microclimate and building environmental performance.
Making Judgements
Students will develop the ability to critically assess different design and management solutions in terms of energy efficiency and environmental sustainability. They will be able to compare various certification systems and select the most appropriate strategies in compliance with current regulations and environmental criteria.
Communication Skills
Students will acquire the ability to clearly and rigorously present both theoretical and applied concepts related to building energy and environmental management, using appropriate technical language. They will be able to effectively communicate the results of analyses and design evaluations, also with the support of digital tools and dedicated software.
Learning Skills
The course aims to develop a methodological approach that enables students to continuously update their knowledge in the fields of sustainable building, technical regulations, and certification systems. Students will be able to independently explore advanced topics and use innovative tools for the analysis and design of building energy and environmental performance.
Prerequisites
For the Building Energy Certification module, there are no formal prerequisites; however, a basic knowledge of Physics and Mathematical Analysis is recommended and beneficial.
For the Building Environmental Certification module, no compulsory prerequisites are required; nonetheless, students are advised to have previously attended the course in Building Construction Technology, in order to acquire the fundamental knowledge necessary for a full understanding of the module’s contents.

Lessons mode
The course will happen in a traditional way with classroom lessons with the use of power point presentation
Frequency
Attendance is optional but is strongly recommended.
Exam mode
For the Building Energy Certification course, a written test and an oral exam are required.
The written test consists in solving an exercise on one of the topics addressed in class;
The oral test consists of a discussion of no longer than 30 minutes aimed at verifying:
- the knowledge of the theoretical methodological content of the course;
- the correct presentation of the applications proposed in the course;
- autonomy in proposing the most appropriate approach for each scope.
The oral exam will also test the student communication skills and his autonomy in the organization and exposure of the theoretical topics.
The final evaluation is carried out by the Commission as the average value of the written test and the oral exam. Both the written and oral exams must be at least sufficient.
For the Building Environmental Certification course, a written examination and an oral examination are also required. Two written tests are administered during the three months of instructional activity, each consisting of five open-ended questions. The final examination includes an oral discussion aimed at evaluating the student’s knowledge of the topics covered during the lectures and the ability to critically discuss the project developed during the course.
The project assignment consists of the preparation of five or six design boards, including the territorial context, analysis of climatic characteristics, the project plan at 1:50 scale with the technological solutions adopted, analysis of the materials used, and the development of a three-dimensional microclimatic simulation using dedicated software. Students will also present the results of the ITACA Protocol application and the energy certification of the project.
The preparation of the design boards will be carried out as a group project and may be based on the project assigned in the Building Construction Technology course.
The final assessment of the Building Environmental Certification module is carried out by averaging the results of the written and oral examinations, provided that both assessments are at least sufficient.
The final grade of the Building Energy and Environmental Management course will be determined as the arithmetic mean of the grades obtained in the two modules.
Example exam questions
Sample exam questions will be made available on the course Moodle page. Examples of exercises will be explained and discussed during lectures and practical sessions, and corresponding materials will be provided on the Moodle platform for further study and reference.
