Objectives

The integrated course aims to provide the basic tools for structural design. The topics addressed are: kinematics and statics of elastic solids and structures; investigation of material behaviour and resistance; elements of stability. At the end of the course the student shall have an understanding of structural forms and functions, the ability to design simple structures, the capability to critically interpret the results of computer aided computations. The focus of the course is on: theory of the elastic beam and system of beams (statically determinate and indeterminate); Cauchy’s continuum; problem of Saint Venant. Moreover aims to illustrate the typical typologies of buildings, providing the elements necessary for understanding their structural functioning and the basic principles of design. The contents of the course, in particular, are: recall of static structures; elements characterizing the typical structural typologies of buildings. Sizing, design and verification of structural organisms, with particular reference to reinforced concrete buildings. The Technical Standards for Construction: actions, methods of analysis, safety checks using the semi-probabilistic method at the limit states. General principles of anti-seismic design. Design criteria for secondary structural elements and non-structural elements. Introduction to structural diagnostics

Learning outcomes

The student will develop a solid command of structural analysis and design: the displacement and force methods; evaluation of displacements and rotations; construction of internal-force diagrams; and extensions to inelastic effects and elastic restraints. They will assimilate the fundamentals of solid mechanics—stress and strain states, the linear isotropic elastic law—and the De Saint Venant models for axial tension, simple and deviated bending, combined compression–bending, shear, and torsion, together with strength criteria under multiaxial stress states and the principles of elastic stability (critical load, Euler buckling, slenderness, ω-method).

In the Structural Engineering (Tecnica delle Costruzioni) module, they will deepen their understanding of the behavior of beams, columns, and frames; actions and SLU/SLE load combinations; and the NTC/Eurocode framework. They will build the ability to model and analyze planar schemes and frames and to size and verify reinforced-concrete and steel sections (bending, shear, axial load, combined compression–bending), including SLE checks and stability. They will also have the opportunity to use structural analysis software autonomously, draft clear technical reports, and apply basic seismic design principles to regular buildings, while developing critical autonomy in assessing model coherence, result sensitivity, and the adequacy of simplifications, and in promptly recognizing potential issues and safety margins.

Prerequisites

prerequisites, if any, as specified in the official study plan

Programme

Module: STRENGTH OF MATERIALS AND STRUCTURES
Analysis of beam structures.
The displacement method for the analysis of statically determinate and indeterminate beam structures; calculation of displacements, rotations, and internal force diagrams. Displacement formulation of the axial elasticity problem.
The principle of virtual work. The force method for the analysis of statically indeterminate structures and for the calculation of displacements.
Applications of the displacement and force methods to structures subjected to inelastic effects, including thermal variations and support settlements. Treatment of elastic supports.
Fundamentals of solid mechanics: stress state, strain state, isotropic linear elastic constitutive law, and the isotropic linear elasticity problem.
The Saint-Venant solid: axial loading; simple and unsymmetrical bending; combined axial compression and bending. Shear: approximate treatment according to Jourawski’s theory; shear centre; shear stresses in thin-walled open and closed sections. Torsion of circular cross-sections.
Strength criteria for multiaxial stress states.
Stability of elastic equilibrium. Buckling loads and Euler instability. Slenderness and the omega method.

Module: STRUCTURAL DESING OF BUILDINGS
The course provides the theoretical and practical foundations for the design and sizing of reinforced concrete structures, presenting the essential tools for setting up and verifying structural elements. The focus is on the design and checking of sections subjected to the main actions—axial force, bending, combined compression–bending, and shear—highlighting the specific behavioral features of reinforced concrete and clarifying its resisting mechanisms. Laboratory activities, centered on the structural design of a building in a seismic zone, enable students to apply the concepts covered in lectures in a guided manner, consolidating both skills and design methodology.
