HISTORY OF MEDIEVAL AND MODERN ART FOR ARCHITECTURE
Course objectives
The course aims to focus on the close relationships existing between art understood in a figurative and iconic sense and the architecture that contains it and of which it is an integral part in a unique condition of symbolic, aesthetic and emblematic intentions. Goal of the course is to know the dynamics of the creation of the pictorial cycles and sculptural arrangements provided for a given architectural place, it allows you to acquire a critical approach to their conservation and enhancement, the ultimate goal of a correct training course for the architect restorer.

The course aims to focus on the close relationships existing between art understood in a figurative and iconic sense and the architecture that contains it and of which it is an integral part in a unique condition of symbolic, aesthetic and emblematic intentions. Middle age art as well as modern art have often developed as the result of a continuous relationship with the space that surrounds them and of which they are an integral and significant part. Getting to know the dynamics of the creation of the pictorial cycles and sculptural arrangements provided for a given architectural place allows you to acquire a critical approach to their conservation and enhancement, the ultimate goal of a correct training course for the architect restorer. Specifically, through the examination of typical cases, the future professional can be equipped with adequate tools for understanding the specific techniques of the materials and the context analysis procedure for a future implementation intervention. In other words, the knowledge of art as a prerequisite to the knowledge of the architecture that contains it and vice versa, in a relationship of consolidated interdisciplinarity that must be part of the educational experience of the students of the specialization in Architecture and Restoration and of the corresponding master in English of Architecture (Conservation).
Prerequisites
Basic knowledge of Western historical periods and architectural and artistic styles.
Books
The texts will be specified in class and cover a basic understanding of medieval and modern Western architecture and art. An integral part of the study will be the classroom lectures, of which pdf will be provided.
Frequency
Attendance is not mandatory but recommended because it facilitates understanding the topics covered and completing the exercise album assigned during the course.
Exam mode
The evaluation will focus on the answers to the oral questions asked during the exam and the quality of the album of exercises submitted by the candidate.
Lesson mode
Lessons take place in classrooms and through scheduled educational visits to churches in the center of Rome.
