Objectives
1. Knowledge and understanding - The module provides two distinct but integrated types of knowledge and
understanding. 1) A methodology regarding the aspects of the typologies of spatial units and the correct
associated statistics; 2) the other analytics regarding the ability to use the appropriate indicators for critical
and complex readings of territorial development linked to tourism phenomena ;
2. Applied knowledge and understanding - processing of statistical data; rudiments of GIS cartography; to
structure analytical studies;
3. Making judgments; the activities that contribute to the development of these skills are carried out through
the involvement of students in group work for the drafting of reports on certain tourism topics;
4. Communication skills - within the course there is a moment dedicated to the presentation of the work
carried out and to the debate in the classroom on the topics covered;
5. Learning skills - The methodological aspects, accompanied by examples and references to statistical and
cartographic databases to find the main indicators; the supplementary readings provided; the in-depth studies
carried out in research activities train students and certify their ability to study independently.
Learning outcomes
The program aims to equip students with technical skills in the main descriptive statistical methodologies applied to territorial studies.
Students will acquire skills in representing the spatiality of phenomena, including an introduction to cartography and GIS. Regarding tourism geography, students will be familiar with the main considerations in the critical geography of tourism, focusing on the production of tourism space.

Module: INTRODUCTION TO SPATIAL DATA
Introduction to the critical geography of tourism, introduction. Critical thinking in geography (6 hours). The tourism sector in critical geography. From mass tourism to niche tourism (6 hours). Tourism and mobility. Territory and image. Peripheral geographies. The legacies of colonialism. Landscape and culture. The enclave. Tourism and sustainability. tourism and climate change (6 hours)Introduction to territorial statistics. Cartography. The territory as a classification criterion. Type of spatial data. (12 hours)Introduction to the statistical analysis of phenomena. Descriptive statistics for point data. Types of distances. Introduction to pattern analysis. Descriptive statistics for areal data. Problem of modification of areal units. Indices and concentration. Descriptive statistics for directional data. Graphic representations. (12 hours)Interpretation of the distributive structure of spatial data: spatial autocorrelation for qualitative and quantitative data, variogram. Introduction to the use of GIS software for viewing spatial data
