Learning outcomes
At the end of this course students will be able to undesrtand the relationships between atom structure and chemical-physical properties. They will understand the main periodic properties of the elements, the causes of periodicity anomalies, and their influence on the reactivity of the most common compounds. They will have acquired knowledge of statistics and data analysis, including parameter estimation and confidence intervals, as well as basic statistical tests (t-tests). They will be able to evaluate acid-base equilibria, complexation equilibria, precipitation equilibria, and redox equilibria, and their graphical representations. They will understand the criteria for nuclear stability and instability, the main types of spontaneous decay, and the main induced nuclear reactions. They will also understand the reactivity of the main classes of inorganic compounds and their preparation methods.
Prerequisites
Although there are no explicit prerequisites, it is important for a good understanding of the course that the student masters the fundamental knowledge learned during the General and Inorganic Chemistry course and during the Mathematics course of the first year of university.

Lessons mode
The course has the following organization:
• theoretical lessons in the classroom
• deepening of theoretical issues in the classroom
• resolution of numerical problems in the classroom
• at the end of the lessons, one (or more) simulation test of the exam (self-assessment test) will be made, following by relative correction in the classroom.
The student will find on the e-learning platform the slides and teaching material (examination procedures, program, recommended texts) useful for the preparation of the exam. It is understood that the slides are a guide to the exam topics, but can never replace the recommended texts and lectures given by the teacher.
Frequency
Attendance is mandatory
Exam mode
The purpose of the exam consists in verifying the level of understanding and deepening on the subject exposed during the course. It also intends to evaluate the student's reasoning skills and the ability to summarize the arguments carried out in the vision of an organic framework of the subject.
The exam consists of a written test with open answers and exercices related to the topics of the program done.
Exams are held during the exam periods provided for in the university teaching regulations, while intermediate tests are not in progress so as not to interfere with the regular attendance of the semester lessons, as established by the study program board.
Example exam questions
During the lessons, exam exercises will be shown and done toghether in the classroom, and some typical questions on the various topics of the course will be asked to the students.
Moreover, at the end of the lessons, one (or more) simulation test of the exam (self-assessment test) will be made, following by relative correction in the classroom.
