Objectives
Knowledge of the main diseases of the respiratory and cardiovascular system, indications for surgery and knowledge of the main surgical procedures.
Knowledge of the semeiological maneuvers performed for diagnostic and therapeutic purposes.
Knowledge of the main corrective methods of the patient's lifestyle, for preventive purposes.
Learning outcomes
At the end of the course, the student will be able to:
Knowledge and understanding
- Describe the pathophysiology of the main diseases of the cardiovascular and respiratory systems.
- Identify the etiopathogenetic and pathological bases of the diseases addressed in the modules on cardiovascular diseases, respiratory diseases, vascular surgery, thoracic surgery, and cardiac surgery.
- Understand the integration between medical and surgical aspects in the management of cardio-respiratory diseases.
Applying knowledge and understanding:
- Apply physiological and clinical knowledge to interpret the main symptom patterns and physical signs of cardiovascular and respiratory diseases.
- Recognize the general principles of diagnosis, prognosis, and treatment of the diseases discussed in the different modules.
- Distinguish between medical and surgical therapeutic indications according to the severity and stage of the disease.
Making judgements:
- Critically analyze a clinical case, identifying the underlying pathogenetic mechanisms and formulating coherent diagnostic hypotheses.
- Integrate knowledge from different specialist areas to achieve a multidisciplinary approach to the patient.
Communication skills
- Communicate clearly and appropriately the clinical reasoning and pathophysiological principles underlying diagnostic and therapeutic decisions.
Learning skills:
- Demonstrate the ability for autonomous learning and continuous professional development in the field of cardio-respiratory diseases, using scientific sources and evidence-based guidelines.
Prerequisites
Before taking the exam, all first- and second-year exams, as well as at least one third-year exam, must have been passed.
In addition, the exam in Pathology and Pathophysiology must have been successfully completed.
The student is also expected to have adequate knowledge of anatomy, physiology, and pathology.

Lessons mode
The lecturer delivers frontal teaching in the traditional format, supported by audiovisual aids and according to a scheduled timetable.
The professional training activities included in this integrated course are carried out in small groups within the hospital departments affiliated with the Degree Programme and in teaching laboratories, following the scheduled rotations.
Frequency
Attendance is mandatory.
Attendance will be recorded in the classroom using paper sign-in sheets.
Exam mode
The exam will be conducted orally and will cover the topics included in the syllabus.
Questions will be open-ended, requiring open responses.
They may concern:
1. definitions of the disease, etiology, pathophysiology, clinical presentations, diagnosis, and treatment;
2. clinical cases;
3. formulation of coherent diagnostic hypotheses.
Example exam questions
The type of questions may vary, including requests for definitions of various diseases, their etiology, pathophysiology, clinical presentations, diagnosis, and treatment.
Alternatively, clinical case scenarios may be presented, requiring the student to apply reasoning and clinical judgment and formulario of diagnostic hypothesis.
For example: A male smoker presents to the emergency department with constrictive chest pain radiating to the left arm. The ECG shows ST-segment elevation in leads II, III, and aVF. What is your diagnostic suspicion, and how should the patient be managed?
