Objectives
The Anatomic Pathology course is annual and is organized in two
consecutive semesters (first semester: Anatomic Pathology IS; second semester;
Anatomic Pathology IIS). At the end of the course, the student must have acquired
knowledge of the pathologic basis of human diseases and understanding of the etio-
pathogenetic mechanisms underlying the development and clinical expression of
specific tissue and organ lesions. By appling the knowledge acquired during the course,
the student will be able to establish the role of Anatomic Pathology in the appropriate
classification of diseases; to understand when histological analysis is required and how
to interpret the result; to understand the clinical implications of the anatomopathological
diagnosis; to correlate pathological and clinical features in order to formulate a
prognosis and to elaborate a specific therapeutic strategy.
Learning outcomes
The expected learning outcomes of the course include the knowledge of the gross and microscopic abnormalities that characterize the pathology of different organs and the understanding of their relation with the symptoms of the disease. By applying the acquired knowledge, the student will be able to interpret the pathological diagnosis and understand its role in the handling and prognosis of the patient. Through the discussion of pathological reports and autoptic findings, the student will develop the ability to make autonomous and critical judgment as required for differential diagnosis, proper classification of diseases and identification of causes of death. At the end of the course, the student will be able to comunicate the pathological report to patients and colleagues. He will also acquire the ability to autonomously deepen and update the topics discussed during the course.
Prerequisites
In order to understand properly the content of the course and achieve the learning objectives, at the beginning of the didactic activity the student must possess adequate knowledge of normal Anatomy and histology, Biology, Genetics, Microbiology, Physiology and General pathology.
Programme
Anatomic Pathology as medical science. The laboratory of Anatomic Pathology. Diagnostic paths and methodologies in Anatomic Pathology. Blood vessels (arteriosclerosis, vasculitides, aneurysms). Heart (congestive heart disease, ischemic heart disease, endocardial and valvular diseases, myocardial diseases, pericardial diseases). Lung and Pleura (vascular disorders, chronic obstructive disease, infections, interstitial diseases, tumors). Gastrointestinal tract (congenital diseases, inflammation, vascular lesions, malabsorption syndromes, tumors). Liver and biliary tract (hereditary diseases, circulatory disorders, infection, cirrhosis, tumors). Pancreas (pancreatitis, tumors). Kidney (cystic disease, glomerular diseases, tubular and tubular-interstitial diseases, diseases of blood vessels, lithiasis, tumors). Urinary bladder (inflammations, tumors). Bone marrow, lymph nodes and spleen (anemia, leukemias, chronic myeloproliferative diseases, lymphomas). Nervous system (infections, vascular disease, trauma, tumors). Male genital system (inflammations, vascular disturbances, tumors). Female genital system (inflammations, vascular disturbances, tumors). Breast (fibrocystic disease, tumors). Endocrine system (hypo- and hyperfunction conditions, tumors). Skeletal system (infections, metabolic disorders, tumors).
The teaching course includes the discussion of numerous clinical cases. No more than 6 hours, at the beginning of the first semester, is dedicated to the general aspects of Anatomic Pathology, the rest of the course is dedicated to the specific topics of the program.

Bibliography
Scientific articles related to topics included in the program will be recommended for integrative purposes to frontal lessons and adopted texts.
Lessons mode
The course is carried out in two consecutive semesters (first semester: Anatomic pathology IS; second semester: Anatomic pathology IIS) and is based on didactic lectures characterized by continuous interaction between teachers and students. The analysis of organ images and additional potential teaching methods such as analysis of histological samples and/or autoptic exams will contribute to the knowledge of the topics included in the program.
Frequency
Mandatory. Attendance tracking through signature.
Exam mode
The evaluation will be based on oral exam to assess the ability of the student to communicate the acquired notions. The evaluation will take into account: a) knowledge of the topics related to the questions; b) adequacy of the answer to each question based on the expected skills at the end of the course; c) logic of the answer; d) use of an appropriate language.
Example exam questions
Atherosclerosis
Myocardial infarct
Pulmonary embolization
Intracranial hemorrhages
