Objectives

Learning outcomes:
• To understand and critically discuss medical research articles in English.
• To classify a publication based on its genre, goals, and characteristics.
• To transform a non-linear text (graphs, tables, figures) into a linear text and viceversa.
• To recognize, in a research article, the methodological elements used by the researchers (inclusion and exclusion criteria, sample choice and size, laboratory methods and data management methods).
• To interpret and critically evaluate the medical and scientific value of the data presented based on its statistical soundness.
• To perform researches on biomedical databanks in English (online and on printed journals).
• To communicate in English (oral or written) with the correct register for scientific communications with colleagues or at conferences.

Learning outcomes

At the end of the course, students will be able to apply theoretical knowledge to clinical practice in the diagnosis and treatment of metabolic, cardiovascular, surgical and internal diseases.

Prerequisites

The knowledges acquired in Applied Pathology 3

Programme

Module: APPLIED MEDICAL SCIENTIFIC METHODS I - DISEASES OF THE RESPIRATORY SYSTEM

Internal Medicine – Evidence-based practice in clinical care
1. Frontal lectures (clinical cases) to understand: the concept of different type of prevention; refresh pyramid of evidence-based medicine sources; types of clinical and experimental studies; basic concepts on how to analyze a cardiovascular RCT; discuss how to apply the evidenced based result of a RCT to a clinical case.
2. Students will be asked to read and analyze with the help of a grid:
- a prospective study (selected by the teacher) in order to understand when we could define a factor as prognostic for a certain disease and the clinical significance applied to a particular clinical case
- a cardiovascular RCT selected by the teacher in order to understand the methodology behind an RCT and how to critically analyze methods, results.

Module: APPLIED MEDICAL SCIENTIFIC METHODS I - DISEASES OF THE CARDIOVASCULAR SYSTEM
Contents:
Through the discussion of clinical cases, we will discuss the diagnostic assessment and prognostic stratification of congestive heart failure, acute coronary syndrome and pulmonary embolism.

Module: APPLIED MEDICAL SCIENTIFIC METHODS I - GENERAL SURGERY
Contents:
Vascular clinical exam: priciples. Cerebrovascular ischemia. Peripheral obstructive disease of the lower limbs. Acute limbs ischemia. Renovascular hypertension. Venous insiufficiency.

Module: APPLIED MEDICAL SCIENTIFIC METHODS II - INTERNAL MEDICINE
Contents:
Introduction to Human Nutrition and disease malnutrition-related
Nutrition in Kidney Diseases and in Neoplastic Diseases
Clinical cases of malnutrition

Module: APPLIED MEDICAL SCIENTIFIC METHODS II- SCIENTIFIC ENGLISH
Write, share, and argue
1. Scientific communication on social networks. Role of social networks in dissemination and communication. Tips and rules for using twitter. How to write a thread addressed to lay public or scholars.
2. Thesis writing. Best practice for thesis writing (structure of a thesis, how to make a good title, composing figures and legends, citations and bibliography). Tutorial with text processing tools in Word: how to use styles, how to make TOC and lists, how to add references, how to review and comment. Critically revise and correct pieces of text from past theses (style, meaning, structure, etc.). Compose a thesis title and table of contents, and assess these texts based on clarity, completeness, correctness.
3. Proposal writing. Mechanisms for funding science. Tips for writing a successful proposal. Read a call for proposal and understand key requirements. Creating and evaluating proposal drafts on a given topic.
