Objectives
Main teaching objectives:
Learn the clinical features and the proper diagnostics techniques (clinical and instrumental) of the central and peripheral nervous system diseases. Know the appropriate pharmacological and surgical therapies in these conditions. Be aware of the purpose and medical-legal implications of these acts. Develop a professional attitude to adopt professional behaviors in accordance with the principles of equity, effectiveness and efficiency and objectives to the national, regional and local healthcare planning. Develop a critical thinking in terms of Global Health, given that a number of health problems spill over national boundaries.

Prerequisites
Basic knowledge of the major anatomical and functional properties of the central and peripheral nervous system.
Programme
Module: Diseases of the nervous system - MED 37
Contents:
Introduction to the course, the motor system, the sensory system, the cranial nerves, movement disorders, neuroimaging, brain tumors, consciousness and its disorder, higher cognitive functions and dementia, neuromuscular diseases, neurophysiological techniques including electromyography/electroneurography and evoked potentials, cerebrovascular diseases, multiple sclerosis and the analysis of cerebrospinal fluid, epilepsy, sleep disorders and electroencephalography, Traumatic brain injury, hydrocephalus, meningitis and encephalitis, headaches.
APP:
Professional activities will include attendance to a VIDEO-EEG laboratory in the Department Human Neurosciences during recording of an exam in groups of 4 students. Students will see how recording is performed, and basic concepts of EEG readings will be explained.
