Learning outcomes

Knowledge and understanding: Understand the principles of biometric and biomechanical variability in humans, distinguishing differences by age and gender, with particular attention to normality values.
Applying knowledge and understanding: Be able to critically analyze biometric data in the study of human biodiversity. Apply basic statistical methodologies to interpret anthropometric and functional variables, and manage both quantitative and qualitative data. Be capable of identifying and estimating the most suitable physiological parameters for planning motor interventions.
Master rehabilitative methodologies integrated with movement sciences and multidisciplinary research skills.
Making judgments: Evaluate and interpret experimental data from quantitative and qualitative research on human biodiversity.
Communication skills: Be able to interact effectively with subjects to obtain the necessary collaboration for reliable measurement estimates. Process and present data using language appropriate to the discipline.
Learning skills: Acquire the ability to consult bibliographic sources, databases, and online information to deepen understanding; develop the ability to assess measurement standardization criteria; be able to decide on the adoption of one measurement method over another; and identify the most appropriate measurement tools.

Programme

Module 1: Methods and Techniques for the Evaluation of Motor Activity
Educational Objectives: The course provides the cultural foundation and scientific knowledge related to performing field and laboratory tests to assess physiological parameters in children, adults, and the elderly, and their applications in relation to well-being and health.
In particular, attention is paid to estimating parameters that may be related to health and human performance in different life and work contexts. Particular emphasis will be placed on analyzing human variability, with particular attention to the characteristics and needs of the population's age groups and gender.
Course Content: Fitness assessment for participation in exercise programs (physiological and motor history) and for monitoring the effectiveness of the intervention. Assessment of health-related fitness components and data interpretation: purposes of health-related fitness assessment and basic principles and guidelines for its assessment. Aerobic fitness assessment (cardiorespiratory fitness or maximal aerobic power): the integrated maximal incremental cardiopulmonary exercise test for measuring maximal oxygen uptake (VO2max). Submaximal tests for predicting VO2max. Methods for assessing body composition. Muscular fitness assessment: measurement of maximal strength and muscular endurance. Flexibility assessment. Assessment of conditional and coordinative motor skills.

Module 2: Rehabilitative Techniques and Prevention of Musculoskeletal Dysfunctions through Physical Exercise
Learning objectives: to provide a high level of theoretical and practical knowledge on rehabilitative methodologies and preventive protocols based on physical exercise. Develop the ability to apply a rigorous evidence-based approach in designing personalized programs, also integrating movement sciences with recent advances in biomedical sciences.
Course Contents: Musculoskeletal pathophysiology in relation to motor activity (6 hours); Clinical and instrumental techniques for functional assessment (6 hours); Design of rehabilitative/preventive protocols for specific pathologies (6 hours); Emerging technologies supporting therapeutic exercise (3 hours); Review of studies on the exercise–health relationship (3 hours); Planning of personalized motor activities (2 hours).

Lessons mode

The course uses an innovative, blended teaching approach, alternating lectures with hands-on practical exercises in which students actively participate. Students will thus acquire mastery of the instrumentation and will be able to complete practical activities relevant to different populations, including athletes. All practical activities will be conducted under the instructor's supervision.
By the end of the course, students should have acquired the knowledge to identify the functional parameters most closely related to the case under consideration and the related reference values, so as to most effectively design the motor intervention.

Frequency

Attendance is mandatory according to the modalities established by the teacher.

Exam mode

The evaluation is carried out through a written test and an oral test about the technique of the physical evaluation.
