Objectives

The course aims to explore in depth the field of motivation in the context of physical and sporting activity, focusing on the theoretical framework of Self-Determination Theory (SDT). The objectives are multiple and aim to provide students with an in-depth understanding of the motivational factors that influence involvement in physical activities. First, the course aims to introduce the fundamental principles of SDT, a theory that examines how people are motivated and how this motivation influences their behavior. Students will have the opportunity to explore key concepts of SDT, such as basic psychological needs (autonomy, competence and social relationships) applied specifically to the context of physical activity. Another objective of the course is to analyze the different forms of motivation, distinguishing between intrinsic and extrinsic motivation, and understand how these influence participation and persistence in physical activity.

The teaching provides the cultural basis and knowledge necessary to prevent any risk of abuse, violence or discrimination of children in sport and to respond appropriately, in order to promote the well-being of children in sport and to develop a comprehensive approach to safeguard best sporting practices.

Familiarize yourself with the basics of scientific research, gaining experience in: Bibliographic research on the main search engines used in the biomedical field; Preparation of a scientific project; Editing and presentation of scientific texts to experts and in a popular format; Graph analysis: interpretation and preparation.

Learning outcomes

At the end of the course, students will be able to demonstrate:

Knowledge and Understanding

A comprehensive understanding of the theoretical principles of Self-Determination Theory (SDT) and their application to sport and physical activity contexts.

Insight into the motivational mechanisms influencing participation, persistence, and psychological well-being in sport.

Knowledge of educational and relational strategies that promote inclusive, ethical, and safe sport environments, preventing abuse and discrimination.

Applying Knowledge and Understanding

Ability to analyze and interpret motivational behaviors of athletes and exercisers in various sport settings.

Skills in designing motivational interventions grounded in autonomy, competence, and relatedness.

Competence in applying basic research methods, including project design, literature review, and effective scientific communication.

Making Judgments

Ability to critically evaluate sport practices and environments, identifying factors that enhance or hinder self-determined motivation.

Ethical and professional awareness, with a focus on safeguarding participants’ psychological well-being.

Communication Skills

Ability to present and discuss sport psychology topics using appropriate scientific and professional terminology.

Proficiency in communicating scientific results clearly and effectively to both expert and non-expert audiences.

Learning Skills
