Polymeric and Composite Materials
Course objectives
Basical knowledge about the different group of polimeric material. Mechanical and thermomechanical behaviour and the elements that influence the variation of it. Bhaviour of composites material. Others objective of course are the knowledge of transformation process related to polimeric materials.

Course program
Overview on polymer, story, diffusion, chemical structure, the concept of macromolecola.
Basical: average molecolar weight (difference between numerical and
ponderal one) Different way of polimerizzation (Additional way
condensation way). Concept of "tacticity". Thermoplastic, Thermosetting,
and elastomeric class of material. Eterofasic blends. Different classis
of polymers.
Science of material: the amorphous phase, the glass transition;
cristallinity of polymers, differential scanning calorimetry (DSC).
Elastic microstrucrure of elastomeric material. Element of
viscoelasticity (model of Maxwell -Voight) and mechanical properties of
polimeric materials. Mechanical properties versus temperature and speed
of loading. Creep, stress relaxation.
Multicomponent polimeric sistems:
Reinforced plastics
foamed plastics
General on composites material, micromechanics and macromechanics of laminates composites material.
Basics on "biosusteining" and "biodegradable" composites material
Process and technology of transformation: Injection, Extrusion, Blowing,
rotational moulding, Special process for termosetting materials fiber
reinforced.
Elements of design with sandwich structure.
Elements of design with foamed polymer.
Prerequisites
It is very helpful for the student taking this course to have a good knowledge gained from the materials science course so as to understand both the microstructure-property relationships arising from both the physical and chemical behavior of polymeric materials and/or especially the various and very different mechanical and chemical/physical behaviors of polymeric materials.
