METALLURGICAL AND METALLOGRAPHIC METHODOLOGIES Single channel
Chair (Coordinator) and Rapporteur: STEFANO NATALI
Lecturers
Objectives
The course provides knowledge about the origin and control of defects in metal structures, from the manufacture of materials or processing technologiesFor their control are called the basic physical principles and applied methods: radiography, ultrasonic, penetrant liquid and magnetic methods.
Learning outcomes
At the end of the course the students will be able to
1) evaluate the genesis, chemical composition and morphology of the main defects that can arise as a result of the main production methods of mechanical components
2) to characterize the defects through suitable non-destructive tests
Prerequisites
an adequate knowledge of mechanical metallurgy is recommended

Lessons mode
The course is delivered in presence
Frequency
Attendance, optional, takes place according to the classrooms and times established by the Presidency. Attendance, although strongly encouraged, does not contribute to the final evaluation
Exam mode
The assessment is based on the results of an oral interview, aimed at verifying the acquisition:
To obtain the highest marks (30/30 cum laude) the student must demonstrate that he has acquired an excellent knowledge of all the topics covered in the course, and that he can apply this knowledge to the solution of problems in the field of industrial engineering, proposing original solutions and demonstrating that they have deepened the study of the subject individually and with personal contributions.
Arguments
- The course
includes the study and analysis of methods for determining the presence of
defects in structural components made of metallic materials.
The first
part of the course analyzes the "genesis" of defects based on the
manufacturing methodology of the structural element, with particular attention
to foundry, welding, and protective coating processes.
The second
part analyzes non-destructive methods for determining the presence of defects,
with particular attention to visual, penetrant, magnetic, and ultrasonic
testing.
The third
part describes and implements metallographic techniques suitable for
characterizing the crystalline grain size of metallic materials.
