Chair (Coordinator) and Rapporteur: FRANCESCO COSTANTINO

Objectives

OBJECTIVES. The course gives the key competences of operations management, both from an organisational-management and a technical-operational point of view. The expected learning outcomes are the capabilities to analyse the relationship of market and supply chain, the role and processes of the company within the supply chain, and the applying knowledge and understanding of the methodologies for production and inventory management.
EXPECTED LEARNING OUTCOMES. Knowledge and understanding: knowledge and understanding of the most important processes and techniques for operations management, and supply chain management. Models and methods for materials management, for the production configuration, the calculation of economic production quantity, and the planning and programming techniques. Capability: capability to analyse with a systemic approach, model problems and identify the best techniques for solving the main challenges of supply chain management, production, and logistics, with a focus on production planning/programming and materials management.

TEACHING METHODS. Classroom lessons, exercises of materials management, economic production quantity, and economic order quantity, sessions of video projections, gamification contest for the verification of the effectiveness of teaching in the classroom. The course entails an active learning pathway in which participants are organized into teams. The teacher assign to teams specific tasks requiring prior study of materials before these are presented in class. This approach is designed to facilitate a deeper understanding and to enable participants to effectively present the content to their peers.

ASSESSMENT OF STUDENTS’ LEARNING. The objective of the exam is to assess the achievement level of the expected learning outcomes. The assessment consists of an oral exam to verify the level of knowledge of the topics, with assessment of both the ability to expose and, above all, the ability to connect and compare the different topics covered in the development of the module. To achieve a score of 30/30 cum laude, the student must demonstrate excellent knowledge of all the topics in the module, being able to link them in a logical and coherent way, also through examples of application, and correct application of numerical cases.

Example exam questions

- Explain the techniques for defining EOQ
- Explain what is risk pooling of and when it is particularly cost effective
- What are the stages of production planning, characteristics, inputs and outputs?
