Title: The feminine in ancient Iran and the representation of historical, legendary, and divine women. The course aims to outline the multiple ways in which the feminine was represented in the culture and society of pre-Islamic Iran (6th century BC - 6th century CE). Within this framework, the study will focus on some paradigmatic figures of Iranian epic, history and pantheon, such as the great goddess Anahita or the Achaemenid and Sasanian queens. These figures embodied different aspects of a sublimated and stereotyped notion of the feminine, whose features responded to the socio-cultural orientation of the period. The study will develop through the analysis of written sources, both internal and external to the Iranian world, while taking into account visual representations whenever possible. The heterogeneous nature of the literary, epigraphic and visual evidence will provide a nuanced picture in which multiple aspects interacted to shape female images promoted by the dominant culture and influenced by social conventions or historical developments. Class material (texts; images; slides ecc.) will be shared with the students through elearning.uniroma1.it/ (STORIA DELLE CIVILTA' DELL'IRAN ANTICO II).
