Film Theory and Modernity
What role have film theories played in defining cinema itself? And what role have films—as “incarnations” of ideas—played as forms of cinematic thought? Film theories have contributed to defining cinema itself and the meaning of cinematic images. The course will explore key moments in theoretical reflection on cinema, focusing on the ideas of critic André Bazin and on the cinematic “modernity” that, beginning in the post-World War II era, introduced a different conception of the cinematic image.
