HISTORY OF CONTEMPORARY ART
Course objectives
Main objective: to provide basic knowledge of the developments of art history from the 19th century to the present. Specific objectives: - recognize the major authors and movements, styles, techniques and languages within the geo-historical contexts in which they developed; - identify valid tools, methods, resources for the study of the topics covered; - develop the ability to connect, recognize, relate information and judgments in an increasingly autonomous way.

Course program
The course traces the development of figurative languages through the major movements of the 19th and 20th centuries. Lectures will illustrate and comment, in chronological order, on the poetics of artists and groups, critical debate, and individual works of art. In particular, Neoclassicism, Romanticism and Realism; Impressionism and Postimpressionism; Expressionism and Historical Vanguards; Abstract Expressionism and Informalism; Research of the 1960s and Neoavantgardes; and Postmodernism will be the subject of lectures.
Prerequisites
Knowledge of the spoken and written Italian; Knowledge of major events and phenomena in history from the 19th to the 20th century.

Frequency
Consistent attendance of educational activities and lessons is highly recommended.
Exam mode
The exam interview aims at ascertaining:
- knowledge of the bibliography, the topics dealt with in the class;
- ability of the student to recognize styles and movements of the works illustrated in handbooks.
Lesson mode
During the lesson the teacher illustrates the poetics of the movements, the main exponents; he comments on the works. Occasionally, dialogue exercises are held in which the reading of the works is done collectively in the classroom, to apply what has been explained up to that point. If possible, educational visits to the major collections of contemporary art in Rome are planned.
