Theater, Film and Media

The course analyzes the birth, development, and main transformations of the film industry by considering technological, aesthetic, sociocultural, and economic aspects. The lectures will offer a general overview of the decisive role played by cinema during the 20th century, placing it at the center of an integrated model of cultural media history. Particular themes will be explored in depth, such as the construction of the star system, the functioning of Hollywood studios, cinema's relationship with other arts, the genre system, and national cinematographies. The module focuses particularly on silent film staging models and the construction of the studio system and star system until its dismantling during the 1950s. Topics will include the economic and industrial history of film, film genres, writing models, the construction of star images, technological transformations, and cinema's impact on 20th-century culture and society. The course includes a monographic focus on commedia all'italiana (Italian-style comedy), a crucial period in Italian cinema history between the late 1950s and the 1970s.

The course analyzes the birth, development, and major transformations of the film industry, considering technological, aesthetic, socio-cultural, and economic aspects. The lectures will provide a general overview of the decisive role played by cinema throughout the 20th century, placing it at the center of an integrated model of media cultural history. Some specific themes will be explored, such as the construction of the star system, the functioning of Hollywood studios, the relationship between cinema and other arts, the genre system, and national cinematographies. The module particularly focuses on staging models of the silent era and the construction of the studio system and star system until its dismantling in the 1950s. Topics will include the economic and industrial history of film, film genres, narrative models, the construction of star images, technological transformations, and the impact of cinema on 20th-century culture and society. The course includes a monographic focus on Italian-style comedy, a crucial period in the history of Italian cinema between the late 1950s and the 1970s.

Useful prerequisites may include: - Preliminary knowledge of history and art history; - Familiarity with basic concepts of cinematic language (editing/sound/narration); - Interest in visual culture and art; - Reading and writing skills (ability to read and interpret academic texts and develop coherent arguments with an appropriate use of sources).

The exam consists of a written test in which the student's knowledge of the basics relating to the history of cinema, the characteristics of individual currents, and the works and authors covered in the course will be tested.
