The course aims to deepen the contribution of educational sciences to the development of an inclusive and multicultural citizenship, capable of addressing the challenges posed by a globalized society. Starting from a historical and critical perspective, it will analyze the processes of literacy and citizenship education from the post-World War II period to the present day, with particular attention to the phenomena of educational inequality and early school leaving, which still represent significant obstacles to genuine social and cultural participation.
Through the reading and discussion of texts by John Dewey and Jacques Attali, the course will foster reflection on the meaning of education as both experience and knowledge—understood not merely as the transmission of information, but as a condition for personal and collective emancipation. From this standpoint, education will be examined as a social and intercultural practice capable of generating inclusion, cohesion, and justice. The analysis of the texts will make it possible to explore the relationship between education, citizenship, and rights, emphasizing the value of knowledge as a common good and the need to counter new forms of educational exclusion arising from contemporary cultural and technological transformations.
Particular attention will be devoted to educational policies and practices aimed at ensuring equal learning opportunities, to the role of the school as a space for intercultural encounter, and to the construction of learning pathways oriented toward global citizenship.
