The course aims to provide knowledge and understanding of the methodological, critical and applicable aspects of the Discipline; it proposes geographical areas and sectorial perspectives in which related projects are activated; it shows the variability of fields of interest; it enables the student to master the specific topics in order to use them and apply them in other fields of study while using the correct specific language. With the acquired knowledge the student will be able to develop autonomous ability of connections with other disciplines in the various historical epochs and cultural contexts.

Knowledge of the main themes of medieval archaeology. Ability to read archaeological sources for knowledge of medieval society. The skills will be acquired with the presentation of a general framework of the discipline and with case studies to exemplify problems and themes. The student will be provided with logical and informative tools (bibliography, archaeological reading training) to be able to continue an independent path.

Basic knowledge of the main themes of Roman archaeology. Basic knowledge of roman and medieval history.

The course aims to offer an overview of the Euro-Mediterranean Middle Ages read through material sources. The chronological path will be followed. Some case studies will be presented for themes and problems fundamental to medieval archaeology. Particular attention will be paid to the themes most discussed in current historiography. Guided visits to museums and archaeological sites will be among the lectures.

The final exam is an oral exam about the topics of the lectures and the bibliography.

Frequency is not binding, but highly recommended.

To pass the exam you the students achieve a grade of no less than 18/30.
The student must demonstrate that he has acquired sufficient knowledge of the topics covered in the course, a basic knowledge of the problems of medieval archaeology and that he is able to explain them adequately.
To achieve a score of 30/30 cum laude, the student must demonstrate that he has acquired excellent knowledge of all the topics covered during the course, being able to connect them in a logical and coherent way.
