The course aims to provide knowledge and understanding of the methodological, critical and applicable aspects of the Discipline; it proposes geographical areas and sectorial perspectives in which related projects are activated; it shows the variability of fields of interest; it enables the student to master the specific topics in order to use them and apply them in other fields of study while using the correct specific language. With the acquired knowledge the student will be able to develop autonomous ability of connections with other disciplines in the various historical epochs and cultural contexts.

Maps reading, calculation of geographical coordinates. The historical dimension of geographical phenomena.
The evolution of the concept of landscape. Historical evolution of Italian landscapes.
The selection and study of sources for the reconstruction of the history of the territory: study of one or more case studies.

Secondary school knowledge of general geography, human geography and general cartography

Introduction to the basic concepts of geography, historical geography and notions of general cartography.
Recognition of the existing relationships between the spatial dimension and the historical dimension in the description and analysis of territories.
The deconstruction of the concept of landscape in its diachronic, geographical and cultural dimensions.

Presentation of written reports and in-depth essays, with reference to the participation in the general cartography seminar and in the events organized in Sapienza for the International Geography Night (April 2024).

Final written test (quiz with both open-ended and closed-ended questions, including one/two questions aimed at ascertaining general cartography knowledge and skills, to be completed in 60 minutes).
