The course aims to provide knowledge and understanding of the methodological, critical and applicable aspects of the Discipline; it proposes geographical areas and sectorial perspectives in which related projects are activated; it shows the variability of fields of interest; it enables the student to master the specific topics in order to use them and apply them in other fields of study while using the correct specific language. With the acquired knowledge the student will be able to develop autonomous ability of connections with other disciplines in the various historical epochs and cultural contexts.

Solid command of linguistic methodologies and theories related to the Italian language; ability to apply, in concrete situations of literary text reading, the knowledge and skills acquired in linguistic analysis, using, when necessary, available digital and IT tools.

The only prerequisite is a good knowledge of the Italian language.

The course coincides with Module A of the Istituzioni di Storia della Lingua Italiana course (code 1023178) for Linguistic and Intercultural Mediation (MLI).

Offered in the first semester, the course is dedicated to an introduction to the history of the Italian language, providing a historical overview of the events that have influenced it, the debates surrounding it, as well as the internal evolution of its varieties. The course also aims to provide basic skills for the linguistic analysis of literary texts.

The course is based on the following textbook:
- Storia dell'italiano. La lingua, i testi, edited by G. Frosini, Salerno, 2020.
Additional bibliography will be provided in class.

The course coincides with Module A of the Italian Linguistics course for Linguistic and Intercultural Mediation (MLI), and it will be held during the first semester, on Tuesdays from 2:00 PM to 4:00 PM in Room 105 (Marco Polo) and Wednesdays from 4:00 PM to 6:00 PM in Room 203 (Marco Polo).

Attendance is not mandatory but strongly recommended.

The course includes a final written exam; participation in class, especially during linguistic analysis exercises, is highly recommended and valued.

Questions on basic historical linguistics (theories regarding the transition from Latin to the Romance languages; developments in stressed and unstressed vowels; main morphological and syntactic changes); questions on specific periods of the history of Italian or on key figures in language debates; linguistic analysis of a text.
