The course aims at exploring the main cultural and socio-economic processes that characterize the Prehistory
of the Mediterranean, from the Neolithic to the Early Iron Age.
The goal is to provide the students with both theoretical models and analytic knowledge in order to develop
skills in the understanding of complex phenomena such as the affirmation of the first productive economy,
the development of the metallurgy, the emergence of social inequalities and the development of complex
societies, taking into account the intertwined phenomena of interaction between the diverse Mediterranean
areas. As regards the Aegean basin specific attention will be devoted to the Bronze Age historic trajectories.

Understanding cultural and socio-economic phenomena in Mediterranean Late Prehistory and Protohistory

The course aims at exploring the main cultural and socio-economic processes that characterise the Prehistory of the Mediterranean, from the Neolithic to the Early Iron Age.
In the course some of the main themes characterising the socio-economic and cultural developments in the Central - Western Mediterranean and Aegean basins will be addressed, from Palaeolithic to Iron Age, from both the theoretical-methodological and analytical point of views.
After a series of introductory lessons aimed at building a general context of the complex historical processes and at illustrating the main theoretical and methodological trends for the Late Prehistory and Protohistory of both the Central – Western Mediterranean (Prof. Giulia Recchia) and the Aegean (Prof. M. Bettelli), a seminar will follow with the aim of an in-depth approach to transversal themes.

Part of the course will be a seminar. Introductive lessons will be followed by participants’ presentations and collective discussions on the basis of selected readings.

Non mandatory but advised

Mid-term assessments are based on the participation to the seminar and the presentations. Oral exam at the end of the course.
