Objectives

The Course aims to lead to the knowledge of the main artistic techniques through the study of literary sources and the detailed examination of the technical processes for the creation of art works. The student will develop skills in recognizing the materials and the ability to trace and interpret the enforcement procedures of the artifacts in the various branches of artistic activity. As part of the same course, the student will be led to the knowledge of modern methodological approaches to the restoration of art works, in relation to the historical evolution of the concept and business practices of the restoration over the centuries.

Learning outcomes

Knowledge of the main artistic techniques between the Middle Ages and the contemporary age; knowledge of the critical and technical problems related to the falsification of works of art; knowledge of the critical problems of restoration

Prerequisites

none

Programme

The course will consist of two sections:
- a first part related to artistic techniques and false in art:
- a second part related to the history and theories of the restoration of works of art.
In the section dedicated to artistic techniques and false the course will focus on the recognition of materials and on the reconstruction of the executive procedures of artistic artifacts, through the direct investigation of the matter of the works and the analysis of technical sources. This year the techniques and materials of wall painting, painting on panel and canvas, from antiquity to the contemporary age, will be the subject of analysis. The course includes first of all a historical and conceptual framework of the relationship between art and technique and to follow the historical analysis of the techniques examined.
The historical path of knowledge will then be enriched by lessons dedicated to false art, a theme closely connected to the knowledge of artistic techniques. After a brief introduction on the terminology issue and the concept of falsehood, known cases of falsification of works of art and figures of forgers who operated in the twentieth century, in Italy and abroad will be analyzed. The possibilities offered by diagnostics applied to cultural heritage to investigate and unveil the systems and processes of falsification will also be illustrated and discussed.

The part of the course related to the history and theories of restoration will be dedicated to the definition of the modern concept of restoration and to the knowledge of the main theoretical elaborations on the subject between the 19th and 21st centuries. The theoretical framework will be developed through the analysis of some cases of restoration work (performed on various types of artifacts) useful to highlight what are the problems that, in terms of methodological and critical choices, each restoration poses, both to restorers and to art historians. The final part of this section of the course will have a historical cut and will analyze the reflections and theorizations on the restoration of works of art in the European scene between the 19th and 21st centuries.
Visits to construction sites and restoration laboratories are planned.
