Learning outcomes

By the end of the course, students will have gained an understanding of the development of Roman painting between the 8th and 9th centuries, having understood the main historical, critical and historiographical dynamics; furthermore, they will be able to analyse the works within their respective historical, cultural and functional contexts.

Prerequisites

Mandatory prerequisites are not required.

Programme

The course aims to provide students with an in-depth insight into the artistic culture and pictorial production of the Carolingian period (8th to 9th century) in Rome. Specific objectives that the module intends to pursue are a critical approach to the art-historical and historiographical issues of the period, in particular towards the concept of renaissance, and a European-wide knowledge of 9th century Roman art.

Books

The examination texts will be collected in a handout available on the classroom.

Lessons mode

Since the educational objectives of the course are primarily aimed at an in-depth critical understanding of Carolingian painting in Rome, the course is organised in lectures. In order to stimulate in the students the contact with the monuments and works, guided tours to the main early medieval churches in Rome are planned.

Frequency

Class attendance is strongly recommended

Exam mode

Knowledge acquisition will be verified through an oral examination, which will consist of a colloquium on the examination bibliography (and the related topics covered in class).

Example exam questions

The student will have to:
- answer questions on the development of art history in the European context and specifically in Rome between the 8th and 9th centuries.
- know the historical context in which the works were created.
- recognise the photographs of the works in the handouts.
- understand the main historiographical issues.
